Speaking of awesome startup sounds, the PowerMac 6500 rocked (and possibly some others like it.) Had like an internal subwoofer but no midranges, and if you turned the speakers off on the monitor/turned the sound all the way up, all you got was crappy bass and it sounded evil as hell.
I wish that people wouldn't turn the 6400 on after midnight.

Anyway... back to 2003 where a floppy isnt even supported by the OS. Or is it? Does anyone know? Has anyone even TRIED???? I havent used a floppy in over 4 years
I think that there is a floppy driver for Darwin (and therefore Mac OS X). Of course, USB floppy drives work with Mac OS X.
Back to the original topic: use a shutdown Applescript to mute the Mac and a startup on to reset it to a normal volume.

Yes, i've used an external floppy drive from a sony VAIO and it works fine, mounts floppies on the desktop as normal. Running OS X 10.2.6 on a G4 12" PB.
The startup chime for the G5 is the same as the current G4's

Oooh!
Where it kind of swirls around the room, before culminating on the G5 itself!
Hells yea that's exactly what I was thinking!

Mr. Publik, it really was great! I loved that machine, but how soon it was abandoned. The AV monitor was fun too!
tools for adding classic startup sounds to OS X can be found here
a few collections of old sounds for those who don't understand what people are referring to:
as embedded quicktime files - listen here
or
as click-for-new-window quicktime files - click to listen here
for true lovers of the welcoming electronic warbling, tweaking tunes in your mac is one thing
check out this WIRED story about somebody writing tunes about their mac.
the album is titled StartupSounds, of course
perhaps these 5 tones?
Strauss's five might appeal more to others
proper dolby sound might suggest the THX trailer
hmmm...
