After just returning from Bogotá, Colombia, I realized that they use their horns in a completely different manner. It's just a 'I'm here' kind of a thing, instead of "GET OUT OF MY F***IN WAY!! :grr:" that it is in the US.

Heck, sometimes I'm scared I'll get shot if I (in my mind) kindly let someone know that I'm here with my horn.

Honking should only be allowed between consenting adults....

I honk when someone is doing something stupid, like turning without a signal. That always bothers the **** out of me.

Heh, just two days ago I was driving along the Ohio Turnpike (I really abhor that road... but it's the only way between my home and college ) and there was this guy in a pickup truck who was behind me for over two hours... and whenever he changed lanes, he used the wrong turn signal. Without fail. I don't mind much when someone isn't using a turn signal to change lanes, but USE THE RIGHT ONE, DAMNIT! Either he's a complete doofus and can't figure out how to work the thing, or someone played a joke on him and crossed his wires.

OK, sorry about the off topic rant. As an attempt to make this post have some meaning, have you ever crossed turn signal wires with the horn? I've heard it's not too hard to do, and just imagine the hilarity.

I don't get bothered if the guy in front of me leaves 0,0004 seconds later than he could, but if they drive bad, or walk where they shouldn't, or just drive like idiots, i do honk. when i'm driving my dad's car, i have to control myself better though - he gets pissed off when i honk ... i guess my driving style isn't very girly - the neighbors of my parents asked my sister "Who is the dark GUY that drove your stepdads car the otehr day?"

The horn should only be used to alert others that they are doing something right now that could result in an accident. So don´t honk afterwards or just because you think the other person is an idiot. The example Bauman gives is actually the right way to do it (if you don´t overuse it)

There is two things in the traffic that makes me mad as hell. If a driver do stuff that is based on the fact that he is in one ton of steel and my bike only weighs 10 kilos. And if they use their horns like Giaguara. I can´t count the times I have expressed my opinion of with my fisted hand on the hood, roof or door of cars.

I work near the entrance to the Holland tunnel in NYC and the honking gets so bad that it becomes really annoying even up on the 11th floor. I just noticed the other day that someone made up signs and put them all around the area that say, "honking doesn't help"

When you see they are about to do something stupid. Not after since that can cause even more damage. Imagine someone about to enter a larger road from a side road. They don´t look careful enough and enter it while there are still cars close to them and you have to break hard. You can´t alter their action (make them dissapear from the road again) so you honk to show your dissatisfaction with them. But you don´t know how they will react. What if they panic and hit their own breaks instead of accelerating? Then you honking would have caused more problems.

Of course if you can´t avoid hitting them use your horn because it might make them see you and accelerate/go to one of the sides. But if accidents can be avoided with other means don´t use the horn.

When I'm in the city I just do the best I can to avoid accidents, as they come looking for me. But when I'm out in my middle-of-nowhere town, I let my megaphone tell people exactly what I don't like about their driving. But rest assured it is only used in extreme situations, usually after I follow them into a parking lot.

Boy people here in Chicago honk all the time and I'm one of them. There's always some chump trying to pull something. Plus there's a certain culture in the city that likes to point out when someone is doing something "wrong". So the horn is perfect for that.
