I don't know exactly how the shipping status screen is mechanized, but I suspect it is dynamically updated through some computerized inventory control system, in which case we may see all sorts of weird gyrations on a new product such as this.

Yeah, but in my past experience the wierd gyrations always went in the other direction. (Sometimes something will ship early but I've never seen it change on Apple's site until it actually ships.) It seems like I good sign that it isn't this time.

Swear to god, I just got a mail from my supplier saying there quoted date for recieiving G5's is tomorrow!!

He will have been quoting information from Ingram Micro (1 of 2 of Apple's UK Distributors - these are the guys who supply the box shifters etc).

    Their site states:

    APPLE POWERMAC G5-1.8G 160GB 512MB SUPERDRIVE 3X PCI-

    Manufacturer\tAPPLE

    Real Time Price _(GBP)

    Manufacturer P/N\tM9031B/A

    IM SKU\t479D610

    Real time stock \t0

    On Order\t125

    ETA date\t18/07/2003

However, given that they have been saying they have been getting 30GB iPod's in stock since early May (current date is 23/7/03), changing the date at least four times I would take this with a large Tequila to go with your pinch of salt.

In the analyst meeting Apple said first G5s were going to seeders, software companies and other interested parties. Consumers would be seeing machines in August.

apple order status screen currently says "sorry, order status unavailable"---must be CPU overload from juggling all of these shipping dates!

Never had a need for wireless networking.

It looks to me like the aftermarket airport card is the same price and looks similar to the BTO option, but I bet it doesn't have the antenna coax and external antenna for the G5 case installation. I am sure they will find some way to punish aftermarket buyers.

The order status screen has been shut down for about three hours now---must be a pretty serious problem.

Changing the status of all the G5's to "Shipped" takes a while.

When do you guys think I'll be able to walk into an Apple store and pick up a G5/1.8? Maybe on the 15th of August or so?
