Two Democratic congressman have introduced a bill that would make a single unauthorized upload of a copyrighted work, such as a song, a federal felony. One critic is calling the legislation "ridiculous."

Reps. John Conyers Jr., (D-Mich.) and Howard Berman (D-Calif.) introduced the "Author, Consumer, and Computer Owner Protection and Security Act of 2003" (ACCOPS Act) on Wednesday.

Saying that a single upload to a peer-to-peer file sharing site can cost the copyright owner thousands of dollars in lost revenue, the bill clarifies that the uploading of one copyrighted work meets the 10 copy, $2,500 threshold for felonious copyright infringement in U.S. copyright law....

Ummmm What in the World is our Government thinking?? Turn every P2P fan into a Felon?

Unemployment is the worst since 1983. Immigration is out of control and the best these fine Democrats can do is make it a Federal Felony to rip off the Movie, Music Industry etc? I'm all for ending piracy but this is just naff thinking.

I hate to get into Party Politics but I really doubt that the Democrats will get much attention from me. This is assinine.

I'm interested in how it will work out when challenged, especially making one offense automatically ten offenses.

I don't doubt that. The fact that two Democrats have pushed this is amazing to me. Demicans and Republicrats. It's time for a Government overhaul...fat chance that ever happens.

Or as the article suggested. How can one person be liable for thousands of damages if each song is only .99. It would take 2500 uploaded songs to reach the current felony copyright limit. Here they seem to be "deducing" that they can pull damage estimates out of think air. Got love that assesment skill when Politicians can barely balance a budget.

Hopefully this bill will go no where, just like the last Berman bill.

That they think that laws like this can only come from republicans. Such thinking shows their bias and ignorance.

The minute someone blames one party or the other for being behind this, they completely discredit themselves.

This kind of horses**t politicis always has and always will be played by politicians seeking a) big contributions from big companies and/or b) to capitalize on a current hot national topic to get name recognition and TV face time. Every dirtbag politician does this garbage. Political party affiliation has absolutely nothing to do with it.

Get out from under your lame shroud of ignorance people.

(note: this is not applicable to anyone who didn't say "damn republicans/democrats" or some variation thereof.)

i think the bias comes from the recent desire from ashcroft et. al. to control as much of people's lives as possible.

this is as unexpected from Democrats as the Woz network was from Wozniak.

I'm all for copyright protection but how in the hell does anyone determine the damages from a single upload? This bill is assinine no matter where it came from.

If you ask me record companies dug themselves into this mess to begin with. First with price gouging, anyone hear of MAPS. Then with bringing greater attention to P2P, hell I bet 50% of the people file sharing pirated music now would still be trading bootleg cassettes with their neighbor if RIAA hadn't been such a public ass about how they handled Napster. They should've watched computer buying trends and how many people were getting online. Now everyone and their grandmother knows where to find free pirated music on a global scale.

RIAA - "HEY EVERYBODY, We're trying to shut down these guys who make our music accessible for free!!"

Joe Schmoe - "I jus' got AOL, I wonda if Ah can find that new Britney Spears song? Whas that site called, Nab-turd? Ah sheet, hey Tom where can Ah find some free music.

Tom, Dick and Johnny - rattles off a long list of file sharing sites

Ashcroft wanting to control people's lives?

Actually the people typically pushing for the infringement on our civil liberties are the clowns over at the CIA, and last time I checked no matter which party is in power those guys are around.

That's just ridiculous hyperbole. A check of the facts shows that you are either joking or a patrician kook.

As well as trial lawyer that help to jack up the price of prescription drugs and increase cost of aids drugs to Africa. Therefore the democrats caused aids in Africa. FOR SHAME!

Well at least the part about the democrats being the pockets of lawyers is correct.

Sometime after people like Ken Lay start doing some hard time for stealing billions, then I'll worry about the occasional pirated song.

I'm not saying that two wrongs make a right -- just that the biggest effort should be make against the biggest criminals, not the easiest targets. For now, the lesson our society seems to be teaching is that if you're going to steal, steal really big and buy off of few political friends with your ill-gotten gains. Not being powerful and not moving in the right social circles is what's punishable.
