FM transmitters are hit and miss. I bought the Transpod system but it didn't work very well. First off although it had variable tuning to find a "empty" FM frequency, the fact is that car tuners pick up distant stations on those locally unused frequencies. Also as you travel, those signals from afar come in and out. The result is that they interfered with the TransPod and I was unable to listen to music without constantly re-tuning the device or hearing static. The Griffin device will probably have the same problem in cities that have lots of FM stations. In the end, the best would be an FM car radio that has an input jack, which many are now incorporating into new radios.
Would that I could record lectures/meetings/interviews in MP3/AIFF on the original iPod, then I'd already have one, but I can't, so I don't.

[quote]IM also hopeing the iPod will develop into a streaming hardisk device for video camcorders it's possible that firewire 800 is required for this as it let's you connect digital device together without the need for a computer...

Me too. I hope the next time my overseas holiday, I don't need to worry about my digital camera's memory.
I have an Aiwa CDC-MP3 in-dash MP3-on-a-CD player and on the front is an "AUX IN" port. So perhaps it'd be nice and farsighted the next time you update your car stereo to get one of those.
The CDC skips ridiculously, even on small potholes and manhole covers, so this is really the only way I can hear MP3s without skippage.
Just get a MiniDisc recorder - cheaper, better...

Yes, I thought of this, but ATRAC seems like such a bastard format. MP3 would make for such a nice way to store lecture/interview/voice-notes into a database with other work/research bits and call up relevant stuff as needed.
Im curious how good the sound quality will be from that fm thing...whoever get's it let's have a review.... ideadlly it would be nice if you could either connect the firewire port directly to the radio or stream it wirelessly via bluetooth or 802.11...

It's terrible. SOunds like a really bad AM station.

That iTrip will oonly work with the 5 Gb iPods, the new ones have firewire covers that would not work witht that.

The port cover on the newer iPods is removable. The manual says so...
