Wow, the G5's HAVE been making their rounds

Remember all that talk about the G5's going out to developers in welded-shut beige cases? Just found out it was absolutely true.

The guys over at [*cough*] got one.

For the longest time apple just sprung new products out and 3-rd party developers of hardware and software would have to scramble to get their products to work with it, the boys at [*cough*] included. They spoke with apple about the problem and became apple hardware developers (or testers what have you).

The G5 they got was indeed in a welded shut beige case, no GUI. They were to run USB and Firewire tests on it and basic [relevant] crunching algorithms. No benchmarking of any kind. And this happed awhile ago. It's been almost a year since they got it (and later returned to apple). Apparently it had USB 2 on board as well.

I was never sure about this whole G5 in beige box business until i heard it from these guys (who dont pay attention to rumor sites as they could care less).

These things have been around for an entire year already??

I hope they work perfectly upon release in this case (not like the Yikes! G4). And also this means they could have had USB 2 on board long ago as well. Food for thought.

You'll want to have that cough seen to.

That's not altogether surprising, especially if it was the doomed Mot G5 they tested against.

If the cases are welded shut, how do they know a G5 is inside?

Did it have one of those big emblems on as did the Blue G3 series had?

1 year ago already? Sheesh, does time fly by when you're waiting for Apple's next CPU...

    oh my, beige? Dear me!

I think they could tell by running tests on it, maybe even looking the Apple System Profiler, that is unless Apple has changed the way the computer looks at itself

then, it would just be an Apple in a beige box with a lock on it

Cough should not talk to you anymore, spreading their good name all around...JK!

The post says 'no GUI' so no, Apple System Profiler wasn't available.

AppleSystem Profiler can be run as a command line app.

You do realize that this doesn't really mean anything. The Box from "Cough" could have been anything really. Most likely it was the Moto G5 which was later pulled. Apple really needs a kick ass CPU and FAST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm thinking apple would do well to market just the "BOX" for a standard Wintel computer based on an Ives design. Say....$100.00 for a killer tower design. It would be labeled "PC inside".

I kinda got the idea that there was no interface of any kind.

Nothing like that. I stupidly posted the name of the actual company originally but Amorph was quick to correct my error. I know apple lurks around these boards, so i hope Amorph got to it quicker than any of them.

Didn't have to get anyone drunk. . Of course i didn't really get any info about it besides the USB 2 thing. Just stuff everyone kinda-maybe-sorta-hought-they-might know already.

It seems to me, like, if Apple adopts USB2, there are sorta saying FireWire is not good enough, but really, it is just supporting the newest standards... am i right here?

I heard Pixar had one they were using to render stuff on. Don't know for sure if it is true.

Wait! There must have been at least an OS of some kind. I may be wrong but the only hardware test you can do without an OS is whether the motherboard explodes on power-on and whether it accepts internal/external hardware.

If so, what OS would Apple be able to provide? This must be their OS simply because the supposedly new hardware usually requires new drivers. Apple has only OS 9, OS X and pure Darwin. Since OS 9 is buried officially (even a year ago it was coming to that), I believe it was Darwin (no GUI of any kind). Darwin has some deeply built-in system info calls which you can use to gather at least partial information about the CPU. Of course, Apple could strip down mach, but it would seem overkill.

Wait, I got it! The original poster is chock full of BS!

Why is it then when some random guy says he has "real information" (about an old rumor for christs sake to boot!), everyone jumps on it likes flies on ****?

I have a thought, no one here really has any advanced info. I bet if someone was actually blessed with this kinda of news, they would be so scared of screwing over thier friend, they wouldn't say anyhting. At least, I know that if I was told privileged info, I wouldn't go breaking my NDA, just so I could be 1337 on appleinsider.

I guess it kind of spoils the fun if your realise that no one here actually has any real inside info.
