well, i think most people multi-task, inwhich case dualies are better. each process is put on its own thread, and each thread is optioned off to either proc at instantiation. if a user tends to run more than one app, and this supposed un-smp aware app is such a hog, it can take one proc, while all other user apps take the other proc; hence an overall quicker feeling for the user. and the difference between a 1.6GHz proc and a 1.8 isn't that big, i wouldn't think, for much noticeable speed issues, unless on long running proc-intensive apps (which ought to be smp aware anyway). i would think in most cases a slightly slower clock speed dualie is faster overall than a slightly faster clock speeded proc.

I multitask, but it isn't often that I have more than one processor intensive task running at a time. I might have iMovie processing a movie clip (processor intensive) while running the web browser or word processor (both non processor intensive). If you have two processor intensive apps doing their thing at the same time, yes the dual 1.6 gig should have faster overall speed than the single 1.8 gig. However each app won't run faster than if it was alone on a single 1.6 gig processor machine.

A lot of benchmarks are run one app at a time and those results will show the dual 1.6 slower than a single 1.8 if the benchmark app isn't optimized to use multiple processors.
