You're a student but money is no option. What would you rather have, an old TiBook or a new 15" AlBook?
As I am a student (even if it is high school) I am going to be getting the updated 15". I decided since I will be doing Photoshop stuff that that 12" would not do for that other then when I'm at home and have it hooked up to my external monitor.
Then again for college I want both so an updated 15" now and a G5 before college next year.
...working sucks but man does it pay off; literally.
Hey don't diss the cheapo iBook! I'm a student at UT and I use the iBook for all my needs. It's a great laptop and you don't feel like you have to be careful with it all the time--it seems a lot more rugged than a powerbook. Anyway, I stay away from the games and editing, so performance is not a big issue with me. If that's the case with you, just go with an iBook!

I'm not 'dissing' it. I said I'd rather have one over a Powerbook. I like iBooks and would like to have one for college. That and a G5 tower too.
Uh, because maybe I don't have money coming out of my ass. Mid-range is there because there exists a need for it. Haven't people been wishing for a Cube Redux? Isn't that a call for a better mid-range option from Apple?

Who the heck are you? The poster child for Apple marketing? I don't need 2Ghz. Heck, I don't even need a 1.6Ghz G5.
Also, I can't see where you think that I was planning on going for a mid-range G5 anyways. I never said which model I'd like (that's right, like, not need.)

Heck, why get a G5 at all, all you need is a 800MHz iBook.
I say this because the G5 2GHz has a lot longer potential for a long life then the 1.6 or 1.8. AS SOMONE without money coming out of my ass I would rather not be impatient and wait the extra month or two to be able to afford the better longer lasting something then be impatient and buy whatever I can afford because I want something now.
And although I am not Apple's poster child...think they'd make me and pay me?!

Meh. That's twice as fast as what I'm on right now anyways.
I don't need a G5, but I'd sure like one.

I have to live within my means. A 1.6Ghz will certainly be overkill for what I'm doing. I'm not a hardcore Photoshopper or a Maya guru. I'm a student. Therefore an iBook would be perfect for me. But again, I'd like to have a G5 too.
Yeah, I know, but if you can get past the irony, it's interesting to find out what people really want. It's my first poll and I didn't do it quite right but it's a good exercise. Thanks to all who've participated.
Maybe new PBs will be announced a week from today. It'll be interesting to see what ends up being the top selling Mac. Right now, at the regular and the Education stores, the top selling Mac is the 12" PB. The G5 is #7. However, if you look at the Business and Government stores, the top Mac is the G5. My guess is that a new 15" AlBook will be the top seller when it comes out.
If you had the chance at a new Albook, why on earth would anyone go for the TiBook? Nostalgia?
To be honest, I'd rather have a mid-range G5 tower and a cheapo iBook.
That's the best idea. The laptops won't excel at desktop work, so might as well have two systems that do their jobs well, instead of one that costs a lot and doesn't do either acceptably.
The big question would be what kind of student you are... I don't think the needs of a film/graphic design student are the same as a business major.
I personally would get a 12" PB for the portability, but would go to a 15" or 17" depending on the screen real estate need. The 12" is a very compelling price/product.

iBook does not be a better laptop then a 12" AlBook. The cost isn't that much different either.
But I agree...that is why I get PBook now, G5 PMac next year and have both. I am curious though, I might skip the G5 PMac and get a G5 Powerbook if they are good enough net year.
I would get a 12" PowerBook for portability, and build a nice nest/dock for it at home with the money saved (I know, "no object") over the larger screen models.
Would you get a 1GB or 512MB DIMM in the spare slot? (assuming Apple keep it with only one open. )

If you are getting a G5 you need a 2GHz.
If you are getting a powerbook you get the screen size that fits you best, because speed differences aren't that great.

go with the 15" old pb.
reason: most likely if you college has any macs they are running os 9 and not this newfangled shit.

most seem to be switching to OS X as fast as possible
let's see, no crashing, no extenstions conflicts, better integration in a windows environment, UNIX, easier to administrate.....

Hey, make your own polls.
Well, if anyone would prefer a DeLL, be sure to mention it here so we can all take a crack at ridiculing you.
