new 1.5G harddrive?

Posted:
in Future Apple Hardware edited January 2014
RCA just came out with a new MP3 player that is about 2inches square and less than an inch thick, with a new 1.5G harddrive built in. A bunch of other OEM suppliers in Taiwan are also looking to build around the same. This seems to fill the void between the flash MP3 players and the ipods. Whats the possibility of Apple coming up with something like this- mini-pod? actually, 1.5G is plenty for most people.

More like 300 songs on your wrist.

Exactly! or on your arm while working out rather than having the ipod in your pocket as I do as there are no belts to hook it on your gym shorts. this new harddrive, whoever makes MP3 players with it, is sure to take a piece of the market.

You either have huge wrists or a very 80s fashion sense.

Got a couple of Taiwan OEMers also working on the same, should hit the market in the next month or two.

Wha? $250 for that? No way.

It's 50% thicker than the iPod, nearly as wide, and weighs just as much. I'll take the extra 8.5 GB + FireWire + DESIGN for the additional $50 thank you very much.

Just think at 48 kbs you can probably get 60 cd's on it rather than only 50. Oh, boy. And just think it's made by the infamous RCA company with their hand-wave warranty. The reviews are stellar too, 2 out of 3 people think it's OK..

No need to apply sarcasm here. If you read my original post, I stated that the new 1.5GB harddrives are hitting the market and that a number of producers are going to be making MP3 players with it. Aside from RCA, which is trashy, Rio is also putting one out. There are those, including myself who already use an ipod, who would like to see an Apple version of the same.

Rio Audio, the pioneer of the portable MP3 audio player, was due to debut a lineup of seven new music players today.

Most of the devices - which should begin shipping this month - are sequels, including a 20GB hard drive device called the Rio Karma that will compete against the popular Apple iPod.

Another new device, the Rio Nitrus, will be among the first portable players to use a hard drive the size of a 10p piece that stores 1.5GB, or about 25 hours, of music. The small drive allows the gadget, priced at $299 (£185), to be slightly larger than a matchbook, and angled like one, so it slips easily into a pocket.

That's all pretty cool news. I think everyone is hoping Apple will do the same!

They had better, looks like others have cottonned on to their success! There's going to be a lot of competition really soon..

I'm sure it was Matsu (not because I know this for a fact, but because I don't remember ever asking for something like this).

I'm more fascinated with the original poster's username.

Yep, but not quite. I thought it would be interesting to have a 1GB+ player that used solid state memory (flash). A small HD still has many of the same problems as a bigger one, though with a 4GB microdrive this device would look interesting.

Ideally, the perfect MP3 solution would have:

1GB+ flash and a media slot

    DAB and FM tuners

    Line-in and mic recording

    take STANDARD issue batteries!

Untill then, iPods are neat, but not for me.

Apple will NOT water down the iPod into some kind of "mini" version. How focused is Rio releasing 7 (!?) new MP3 players? Doesn't that seem excessive?

    Apple will keep it simple.

The iPod is already rather small, so I think the only thing needed is a wrist band to carry the iPod on while you run or something, because I wouldnt trust just holding it, and it isn't comfortable to have in a pocket.

When I go running (I run sometimes) I hold my walkman in my hand but I have the wrist strap on to help prevent a bad situation of it slipping out of my hand from becoming worse if it would fall hit the hard ground.

That isn't to say I am super careful and CD players can take pretty much damage, I know a 4ft drop to cement will not stop it from working...though you have to re-attach the lid.

Also a 7ft drop onto carpet will also snap off the lid but you can put it back on (luckily).

All-in-all screw walkmans, release the new PBooks so I can get the 10GB iPod for $69!
