I think the imac update is delayed for a few reasons.
a. apple wants to maximize press coverage, since there will not be any significant new news for a little while. Powermacs were updated about 3 weeks after MWSF but surely they were ready. Apple also wanted to reiterate, if you need OS 9 you better buy your powermac now. Announcing the imac in a few weeks will keep apple in the news longer before the new IBM chips arrive.
b. perhaps the 15" apple display will come back, a bit wider. Matching the anticipated 15.4" powerbook, and a new 15" imac with a wider screen as well. Apple will probablly want to deplete supplies of this display, the tibook and imac before announcing the updates.
c. imac revisions: maybe we will even see the 15" dropped for a 20" and the 17" price decreased.
Apple's goal to stay in the media's eye (and potential customer's minds) until they announce huge changes later this year. I wouldn't be surprised if more software is on tap (imusic maybe----- you mix your own tracks, and save as mp3 to add to your itunes playlist. You be the dj and mix it yourself)

I think patience will be rewarded this year.
