Hmmm, The Blue Meanie thinks this forum is looking a bit stale. Time for some provocation...

PS - A note for all you rebellious colonials on the other side of the Atlantic:- 'Coronation Street' is a nationally watched British soap opera set in Manchester, and Albert Square is the fictional setting for another, 'Eastenders', set in London

Yes, very thought provoking. Race relations is an odd thing within the US. I myself have many small battles due to my Asian heritage, I've been spit upon and had bottles of piss thrown at me along with the usual slurs. But I count those as the ignorant few. For very good books on Race in the US read "Race Matters" by Cornel West (very intelligent and warm speaker) and "Why We Can't Wait" by MLK Jr.

I do have to say though some of the minority policies do only favor black-Americans. I remember a few years back UCLA got into a bit of trouble for placing a ceiling on the amount of Asian applicants they were going to admit despite qualifications.

No, America hasn't failed in every aspect of race relations, but it still fails in many. If you were standing on a street corner waiting to cross and was spat upon while being called a racial epiteth you would understand. Many people still do not see or choose not to see that there is still a problem.

The Blue Meanie's been posting here for more than two years. He ain't no newbie.

Secondly, black American men do not live as long as white American men and have a one in twelve chance of going to jail. If the present trends continue (I read yesterday), 30% of the black population can expect to go at some point.

They spend more on jails than social housing in America. This isn't enlightened policy.

And the ten fold increase (since the 1960's ) in youth suicide, homelessness, divorce, child abuse etc etc etc is all caused by the big bad white man I suppose...?

No mention of the hispanic population, the asian migrants who succeed under otherwise appalling social conditions etc....

My beef is the simplistic answers syndrome that seems to permeate much thinking on the left & the right.

Ps I was here b4 the great crash..when the boomgat fell....ya ya but I is a much nicer person than I was then..

So when white men don't live as long as black women and can expect a longer sentence than said women for the same crime what does that say about the racism in our system?

Are we to believe that black women are the oppressors of white men?

Well, if we would decriminalize drugs our prisons would empty rather quickly. With drugs being legal there goes a good chunk of the illegal trafficking, the illegal drug dealing, the gang wars and violence over drug territories, et cetera. The war on drugs is a war on the inner cities as well as our freedom to do what we please to our own bodies.

Why is it that americans seem to loathe their inner cities, while the rest of the world is busy making it super trendy to live in ye " olde slums..."

Trust the Brits to kick the oppressed working class out of their olde slums & hovels & call it progress.

Yeah america sux in this respect..

    Down with mock georgian restoration...

At least the americans by and large let their olde slums & hovels be inhabited by slum- landlords & hovellers of olde...( american hobbits )...

Maybe because America is a capitalist society and not a socialist one.

Some of his assertions may have a degree of merit; it's true that most black people who are highly successful, owe that in some part to Affirmative Action. Truthfully I couldn't even tell if he agreed in principle with the idea of AA or not, but I agree with his implication that AA should not be the "sole route" to success.

But most of his points amount to little more than angry rhetoric, since everything is veiled in obscure personal references and backed up only by his own bias, not factual data.

In short, I don't feel provoked.

That reply doesn't really make sense, particularly as the courts and jails are primarily state run institutions. Here's some links about differing definitions of capitalism and socialism. Maybe you can be more specific?

Hmmm, a volley of unprovoked personal insults and we're still on page one. Way to have a rational, adult discussion, Aquafire!

Don't you think the fact that the author is black might just mean he has a certain perspective on these issues?
