Why does Apple charge sales tax?

    IIRC, it isn't just if they have a retail presence in the state, but if they have *any* presence in the state... marketing offices, research labs, anything. Anytime they have to register with a state to do business in that state (including handing out paychecks), they have to charge sales tax in that state.

    There's also no sales tax in Deleware, but there is no Apple Store, there is (ahem) CompUSA though.

    Well you all ought to be glad you're not here in the UK - we pay "sales tax" or VAT (value added tax) at a rate of 17.5%. However shops over here add this into the ticket price so what you see is what you pay.

    they charge sales tax because they are incorporated in every state so no one can use the name Apple Computer Inc. so yes thye've always charged sales tax even before they had stores
