[B]Make the base somewhat bigger, put a woofer in there (for bass frequencies <subwoofer> aka the older Performa tower w/ internal sub)...
A sub woofer -inside- the iMac base (far smaller than the Performa) would inevitably cause your hard drive to crash from vibration. And what ungodly amount of shielding would it need to keep the speaker magnet from affecting the data on the disk?
I won't say it's impossible though.

So why not wireless speakers? Place them anywhere and have a charger base elsewhere (in a closet or drawer when not needed) to hang them on once a week or so...
I don't need or forsee the iMac with actual subwoofer or screen speakers. Traditionally Apple speakers have always sucked. Leave that to 3rd parties I'm afraid.
