That's odd for Apple to do that isn't it? I mean, I've been checking Software Update and the Apple news, downloads and software pages on a regular basis, the latest thing was a Java update, and that was today.
So 10.2.7 is already out, but we can't use it? (Non-G5 owners that is).
I personally don't mind paying for a rounded figure, i.e: 10.3, but I hope we don't have to pay for 10.2.8, (Is 10.2.8 Jaguar now or Panther?)
That would imply that no code changes were made between 10.2.7 and 10.2.8.
If anything was updated past 10.2.7 (and it looks like it was, although I haven't run a side-by-side diff on the binaries ), then 10.2.8 would be appropriate.

There is a 10.2.7 (G5) for the G5s and there was a 10.2.7 for the rest of us.
That 10.2.7 for the rest of us was renamed to 10.2.8 in the latest build - they didn't skip 10.2.7 to concentrate on the next update, they just renamed it (and fixed a couple of bugs in the previous build).

A-HA!
So it's a valid update version bump after all.
(Yeah, I like technicalities. They make life interesting.)
So then what's the consensus: Panther reving up to be released within a month or so, buying a G5 after Panther's release won't come pre-installed with the latest OS? That sounds like BS to me.

Sounds like BS to me too. I'm sure Apple is doing everything in its power to put Panther on the G5 because 10.2.7 is making the G5 look like crap performance-wise (relatively speaking of course).
It's in Apple's best intention to have G5s ship with 10.3.
Yeah, that's BS... machines ship with the latest and greatest version available as of the time the machine is built. Period.
10.2.8 may be a final stop on the Jaguar train, to take care of some issues in various components, rolling in the latest security updates for one thing. (It's easier to ask a customer what version they have running than to ask them to check /Library/Receipts for the list of Security Updates...) This will make future customer service easier for Apple, post-10.3 release. Tech support can concentrate on learning 10.3, and advise 10.2.x users to upgrade to 10.2.8, period. Simple.

Thanks a lot!

Well, I've been very quit about Panther, Panther Server and Photoshop CS

10.3 is Panther. Pay.

Correct.

Yeah, I thought that. Anyway, thanks JLL and Kickaha.
