Is it better to be an optimist or a pessimist ?

Some say pessimism is better because when things go wrong or break your not as dissapointed.

Some say optimism is better because no matter what befalls you, you end up seeing the upside of the event.

I've decided I am basically an optimist..

And even though I have no empirical evidence to back it..think that in general Apple users are more optimistic than their pessimistic PeeCee cousins..

If you've ever read future hardware, you'd know that Apple has turned everyone into pessimists.

An optimist can never be pleasantly surprised. If something good happens, they expected it to. That's why it's better to be a pessimist.

my girlfriend has this saying about Pessimist:

If you are a pessimist and you are right you can tell everyone you were right. if you are wrong you're pleasantly surprised.

I tend to be an optimist, and believe that things will work out in the end.

However, I also expect that between now and the end, everything that can go wrong will go wrong.

    Maybe I'm a pessimistic-optimist?

Nah, it's just that if it doesn't kill you it's not all that bad. It's actually good.

President Bush goes to congress wanting to ask for tens of billions of dollars to spend in Eye-Rark.

He makes it clear it isn't a loan to be paid back...

At the end of his speech, he asks everyone to move into optimist or pessimist groupings. The congress members bemusedly follow his order..

After a few minutes Bush marches straight over to where the pessimists are milling around...draws them into a huddle..and has a few words..

Seconds later he is walking away with a wheel barrow overflowing with the money he was asking for..

" Moral " of the joke...

When it coms to asking for money..always hit on pessimists..because they never expect it back

When it comes to anything technical, I am optimistic. When to people, pessimist .. to most people. NEver expect people to do anything altruistic or things that take any effort. I believed otherwise but just got tired... Of course there are some who have managed to make me be optimistic to their friends etc too.

I originally thought being pessimistic was better, because whenever something bad happens you'd expect it to happen, and whenever something good happens you're pleasantly surprised. But the fact of the matter is that if you're an optimist, even if something bad happens you're still cool with things. I was late to work one day and really tired and I got stuck in THREE traffic jams one day and then I went to the dentist but even after all that crap, I went home and said, "My day has gone okay... could have been better but it also could have been worse!"

When I'm in a pessimistic mood, it's usually more like, "Ugh, my day sucked as usual." Or if it was a good day, it might be something like "Ah, it was okay. I guess I had fun." So being a pessimist might seem better logically, but it isn't.

Now that is a pragmatists "sitting on the fence of life " answer.

    Therefore :

    Pessimists " SUCK"

    Optimists " BLOW"

When I'm feeling pessimistic, I think "It can't get any worse than this." When I'm optimistic, I think "Yes, it can!"

Hey Mr Burningwheel what's happened to your count ?

As of the time of my posting this, Ai's got you marked down as a senior member with 884 posts...

Is that a result of turning wheel, burning wheel or a pessimist's reality check ?\
