For now could you just copy and paste the text from the US site? I'd like to see exactly what it says (the whole page)

I would if it were my account. The person who does have the account checked for me and its almost word for word what the german version says (obviously in English though). Believe it or not, but it actually says "Apple iShot Digital Camera".

They took a screenshot but haven't sent it to me yet

Introducing iShot the first digital camera developed for the adult entertainment industry. Now anyone can be a porn star with the included iEnlarge digital video software. (male and female versions available)

Isn't it great when some one actually comes up with some real information and the thread instantly turns into a debate over whether the iShot will be for hunting or porn.

    edited to add above comment.

Please Apple do not listen to them!!!

The camera market is hypercompetitve without any nitch unfilled. The iPod saw a great gap in the market that has only now started to be filled up. You would have to revise the model annually and there would not be high margins needed. So unless you can bring something big to the table, don't bother.

The same goes for any Palm like device...

I'm not so sure that making cameras is impossible or unwise. The market will be huge, you must compete on price which Apple doesn't really like to do, but there is a whole world of film to replace over the next few years.

Already a mix of electronics, computer, and traditional film makers are competing. So what's one more computer maker? Lots of people making cameras means lots of people making parts, which will eventually lead to a host of suppliers, which could lead to a market somewhat like the computer market with component makers and brand identities.

It's not an entirely fruitless avenue. That market will keep growing, so who knows?

I gave up on waiting on an iCam and blew $1000.00 on a Nikon Coolpix 4500 about two and a half weeks ago, so it would follow that Apple would introduce theirs now just to spite me...

Everyone stating that Apple will fail if they release a digital camera into the competitive market is missing the big picture.

With the undeniable success of the iPod, almost everyone agrees that Apple succeeded where NO ONE thought they could. They claimed there was no market...they claimed the price was too high...they claimed it was missing <insert random feature here> and was doomed to fail.

But now the iPod is one of Apple's most successful products ever, and the #1 MP3 player in Japan...where people really know their electronics. And on pure specs alone, the iPod really is an amazing piece of hardware compared to the primarily cheezy RAM based MP3 players that were the rage when Apple first announced.

But aside from the hardware, the iPod succeeded because it was distinctively "Apple". The seamless integration with iTunes and Firewire turned transfering your music collection to an MP3 player into minutes instead of the agonizing hours via slow USB 1.1 devices. Just like the Mac itself, the "user experience and interface" is everything, and worth paying extra for. And people who'd never even considered buying an MP3 player were suddenly in love.

So back to the point...Apple doesn't need to introduce a digital camera to satisfy the needs of full time professional photographers. It needs to come up with a digital camera that is distinctively "Apple" that people will fall in love with. What I'd like to see:

1 - iPod hard drive w/20 GB minimum storage

    2 - 2.1 Megapixel (Consumer use, people...)

    3 - Firewire connectivity

4 - Snapshot AND Movie modes

5 - Video Conferencing ready with iChat 2.0

This camera doesn't need to have the most gizmos, or be the lowest price. If it's priced slightly (I mean SLIGHTLY!) higher than average for cameras with similar photographic quality, but interfaces to the Mac and iPhoto/iMovie the way the iPod did with iTunes, Apple will not be able to keep up with demand.

Ensoniq, I like those specs, but I think it will need to be 3 MP instead of 2.

Also, what if it could interface with iPhoto the way that iTunes interfaces with the iPod ? Not just a one-way communication with your camera, but a two-way one?

You could synchronize your Photo Albums and show them on a TV via video-out, OR on the built-in LCD (which I somehow suspect will be a little larger than most consumer digital cameras).

I don't like the HDD idea. If Apple does a still camera, it should be best of class for still photos. A 20 GB HDD is overkill for photos, so it would really be a movie camera.

A still camera would be cheaper and more popular...and most likely smaller.

I wouldn't buy a still camera that shoots fewer than 4 mp. It wouldn't necessarily be too expensive either. $500 or so. Apple's not really in the business of selling cheap stuff. $300 for an mp3 player...$500 for a really nice 4 mp digital camera...

Eugene, all of today's still cameras double as basic videocams as well. The major limiting factor is STORAGE SPACE, most of them top out at a minute or two of video! I deal with lots of toy-buying consumers, and a GOOD combination still/movie camera is practically a Holy Grail for many people.

Plus, I still think the HD is justified when using the iDevice to share your photos (and maybe your movies). Much like the Color iPod With Video Out that so many people have wished for....

....and some might argue that 20 GB is overkill for an mp3 player but here we are (and 40 GB coming along most likely).

What if this camera was not a simple still camera but had lots more functionality? A pocket sized media center? DV and still camera and mp3 player wrapped into one? Portable, browsable storage and presentation tool which plugs into a TV or projector and will play Keynote presentations too?

Could be too much but perhaps an iShot would be more than just shooting pix (although I doubt it will be called iShot).

ok, so if this iShot camera is possible could it be the case that:

    1) Apple will produce the first digital camera with a Firewire interface?

    2) Apple has waited so long on the release of the new iPods because they need to have the iShot prepared to release with it? Why? Because they have developed a way for the iShot to download its pictures directly to the iPod using firewire.

I know digicams take up to 640x480 res movies, but they're not really billed as movie cameras. Apple shouldn't bill still camera as a movie camera. And it shouldn't need 20 GB for low quality videos.

Right now nobody has a DV camera that takes decent still photos or vice-versa. To do both right would cost more than buying these two devices separately.

And a 20 GB HDD would make the camera much larger than desired, I'd bet. An Apple digicam should be Elph sized, IMO. There's no way you can shoehorn a 20 GB 1.8 inch HDD + 3x optical zoom + decent optics into an Elph at this point.

Several professional quality SLRs have FireWire. I'm not sure how most DV cams download pics from their memory cards. I know the Sony models use FireWire for video and USB for stills.

Then I probably wouldn't be able to justify it's purchase. I don't want a Swiss Army tool. I want a digital camera.

    iShot

If Apple did nothing more than make the camera's controls as simple as the iPod's it will sell like hotcakes. Even the nicest digital cameras out there have horribly difficult interfaces - you practcally need an engineering degree jsut to delete a pic from most camera's storage.

Then if you add integration with an iPod (think capture image direct to iPod via Firewire) you have a real winner. No expensve flash cards, memory sticks, etc. Just capture to the iPod and when you plug the iPod into the Mac, iPhoto automatically imports them for you.

Now I see why the called it "iPod".
