so, someone tell me what happens in this one? i've never read the books.
The "Titanic" hits an iceberg and sinks.
I'm avoiding spoilers myself (not having read the books either), but I have looked around on the web for some background information on the Middle Earth universe and came across this site a few months ago. It's very comprehensive, though I could not (nor did not make an effort to) find a synopsis of the LOTR cycle.
That trailer is a total hack job done while post-production wasn't even wrapped up. I expect Trailer 2 to be much much better...no whisking you through a gazillion quick slices of footage.
Just thought to post this link regarding theater locations where you can see the special extended version of LOTR that was mentioned towards the beginning of this thread:

I noticed one scene where Dernhelm-Eowyn with Merry was listening to Aragorn command their army. What's up with dat?
Jonathan: Have you seen the first two movies? What happens in ROTK is this:
SPOILER ALERT!!!
Aragorn screws Eowyn, Arwen leaves Middle Earth, Sauron takes over the world, Frodo retains all his fingers, and Gollum lives happily ever after.
