Will I wait for the dual-core 9800? Nah, I'm using a Pismo now and that does fine for making my web site. But I will definitely get a 970 and fill up my VISA. That should give me 10x the performance and I can get into adding videos to the site and so on. Call me naive but I believe this.
So what does that say about all the men around here drooling lasciviously over these new processors?

just state for the record: the last time IBM announced a partnership with the funky fruit company was ... uh ... 1998, when they revieled the 750x proc. (aka G3)
That's quite a time, isn't it? Actually, i don't know anything about rules regarding "who is allowed to announce tech spec a partner might use in there own line." Maybe apple feels pressed, if IBM announce some tech specs earlier than themself. I really would knoe whats under the hood?
I think that Apple, if they have chosen or will choose the PPC 970, will want to have the Powermac 970 ready to ship as soon as the chips start rolling out of the factory. It would be stupid for Apple to release 2 more G4 semi-upgrades. Apple would become a stagnant pool of G4 dung.
[quote] Based on my info, I'm inclinded to agree with Mac Bidouille.

y'know, I remember waiting for the G4 back when. And...they said it was a year to 18 months or something ridiculous away. It turned up much, much earlier than anticipated.
Same with the duals shown at the WWDC back when.
I find it hard to believe that Apple, who've had a steady stream of 970 prototypes...for over a year already? And an increasingly petering out set of G4 upgrades... An IBM press releases showing higher clocks (obviously better yields...) A chip that is ready to ramp from beginning 2003. A partner in Apple who've been co-developing this for years.
Where was I? I find it hard that Apple won't be dying to kick these out of the door come Macworld New York this July. EVEN if it's a demo' that ships in several months. Look at the dual 1.42 G4, the iMac2, the 17 inch Powerbook. They all shipped...are shipping late.
I'd figure the delay, if there was one, was down to motherboard issues/or a controller interface that Apple was developing themselves. But Nvidia and every Asian Motherboard maker spit out leading edge x86 boards... How on Earth would Apple have stuffed up with four years to go at it? We heard about some motherboard probs in 2002. But that is a year ago now. Or will be come the fall.
Apple have to release something groudbreaking for the cpu. If they want to get their 'power'Mac sales engine and their profits back up, then they need a 970 flavour of compelling. Macs are downright sluggish on 'X' right across the board. I was amazed at how treacle-like PS7 was on a dual 1 gigger. Pause worthy, certainly. They need kit to make these things fly. The 'X' crown jewel needs a decent hardware engine. Right now? The embedded G4 aint it.
I think the French sight could be on the money.
The stage is set, surely, for Macworld New York, a 970 and 10.3 (which, ironically, Apple are equally as tight lipped about as they are the 970. What a coincidence, eh?)
What else are they going to show? They've updated everything else hardware wise...

Hmm, isn't that two questions.
I think Apple will debut the 970 at Macworld New York in July. They must know what a bind they are in with sliding Tower sales. The Towers are Apple's heart, their 'sales engine'.
It just occured to me. If 'power'Mac sales keep sliding at their current rate then we'll be on sales of 75 thousand Towers per quarter in a few years. Not good.
Well they just released new towers so they can't release the 970s if they had yet. Also, the other 970 thread speculated that IBM was stock piling each chip (1.8, 2.5, etc)
If Apple released the 970 in a phat new case people aren't gonna want to waut 2 months for the thing to ship. So even if some chips are ready early, stock pile them for MWNY for a big splash and all models shipping immediately.

Sources are saying Apple is a customer.
But...not until next(?!) year?
Tell me...say it aint so...

He must be a designer.
It drives me crazy when people don't space out paragraphs or seperate thoughts.
It also makes it easier to skim posts.
you can tell he is very proud of what he wrote
