The problem with desktops is that they can't fit more than a 17" CRT on top, if that, and they don't play too nice with LCDs. Also, they're quite deep so if you want to fit a keyboard AND a desktop on your desk, you need a lot of room between the desk and the wall. I ran into this problem when trying to set up a beige G3 on a little dorm desk. I had to put the desktop to the side, and the monitor in front of me (the monitor had space to stow the keyboard under the "chin"). On the other hand, the desktop took essentially zero desk space because it's flat on top so I can use it like the rest of my desk.

Most of these I can understand although obviously they do not affect everyone - I certainly am not in favour of dropping the tower, I think a choice would be a good thing so people can choose the form factor most appropriate to their needs.
The comment about LCDs I don't understand though - I use mine with an LCD. It sits on top quite happily just like a normal monitor. What's the problem?
(Then again, for the specific case of Apple's Studio Displays, which do not have a traditional stand, it might be a problem, but certainly conventional LCDs do not have this issue)
Hey, It's not so bad. Just imagine, It could've ended up like this 3 foot tall G5 Cylinder I found during my layover in the airport in Newark last weekend!
