Hopefully some after-market company will come out with a battary that would actually last 4-5 hours, I think I'd be willing to part with $180+or- for it.
Neutrino that's nice but those things don't really work if the battery doesn't, now do they? Typical cheapskate Apple. I thought Moto was so great about "embedded" crap that G4s were supposed to keep getting more efficient. And since it's ATi I doubt they are the culprit. I think Apple is just being cheap.
Reducing CPU on my 12" has the most pronounced effect, it DOUBLES battery time almost, and spinning the drive down really helps too. The other things like turning off Ethernet, modem, Bluetooth, and Airport get 20 mins each for turning them off approximately. Apples used to have such good battery. Now especially without a second battery bay this is a bad direction to be going in.

I'm not saying I like how it is, I'm just trying to understand it. If somene has put the Ti PB and Al PB side-by-side can they compare the physical sizes of the battery? Can the battery from the Ti PB be used in the new Al PB?
I talked to some guy at apple support on reseting a battery. My old 550Ti was getting 50minutes on a battery on the longest battery life setting.
Charge your computer completely until the power connector changes to green. Then unplug and use your battery and the reserve power thingy comes on. Do not plug the charger in yet. Let the battery drain completely and the computer will go into auto-sleep mode. (the battery has a small backup charge so make sure u don't let it do the auto-sleep mode forever.)
Plug the charger back in and let it charge completely then unplug the charger and you have reset the microprocessor that's in the battery and u should get correct times. (my Ti gets 2 1/2 hours now)
Someone over at SpyMac claimed that he got 4 hours and 45 minutes on his 15" Al Book with screen at full brightness. He must be kidding, I can't believe a new 15" AlBook would get more battery life than my Ti did out of the box.
yeah i know neutrino I was just givin ya a hard time. I don't think they're the same size but I don't know. Usually it's not a good idea to mix and match components.
Here is a related question on batteries. As I hardly ever use the battery- in the office, plugged in, when traveling, usually only plugged in at hotels. How do I preserve the life of the battery for those times when I use it. Should I drain it out completely and take it out, putting it back in on those once or twice a month trips when I do use it? or leave it in when its plugged in so its charged up full all the time?

This is in re the new 15incher, by the way.
I've never owned an Apple laptop (I'm about to buy a new PB 15"), but I did have a battery go bad on my Sony Vaio pcg-540 by leaving it in all the time. Sony never said anything about charging it and taking it out when running on AC. I'd suggest if you are running on AC to take the battery out. But I'll make sure to follow Apple's instructions about battery use and maintainance when I do get the PB.

My understanding is different; I believe that with the Powerbooks you're suppose to leave the battery in and run on AC whenever possible to preserve the life of the battery.
I wish I could be more authortative about the subject but my experience is that batteries left on the shelf unused age quicker than those left in the computer even if the computer is primarily connected to AC.
Antidotal but my experience across a number of hardware types, PC and Mac.

I read on the Apple support boards that the 15" Al PB battery is physically smaller than the battery from the 15" Ti PB.
This makes it unlikely that NewerTech will make a 65W-hr battery for the new PB. There doesn't seem to be space.
The lesser capacity batteries are a real dissapointment. Perhaps the new die shrunk G4's consume so much less power that Apple could get away with a cheaper battery?
The newer 65Wh batter is pretty sweet, but is essentially an extra $140. With the newer battery, you could probably get 4.5 hours of life.
Isn't Apple saying it HAS 4.5 hours of battery life. Or does that just mean you can leave it on for that period of time, but not work on it during?!
It's been reported on some of the Panther threads that Panther has quite an effect on extending battery life. Some said that their battery life was as much as doubled (!). I find an improvement this great rather hard to believe, but any improvement would definitely be welcome...
Can anyone who daringly has a pre-release version of Panther confirm this?
My ibook 12.1 800 is getting nearly 4 hours of battery life using Panther...but i haven't tried it with Jaguar. I am going to be installing Jaguar soon because I am having issues with the first dev-release of Panther, but will let everyone know the differences.

I once got aprox 5 and a half hours out of my Tibook 1000mhz, but mostly around 4h45min or so.
Also, turn off airport and bluetooth and Ethernet and modem to save battery. You can turn off ethernet and modem by turning them off in Network Prefs, or make a Location with only 1 of each like I did.
I'm not seeing an option to turn them off? Is this a PowerBook only feature? I'm attempting to maximize battery on a 12" 800 iBook.
Guys, this whole discharging the battery nonsense doesn't necessarily apply to Lithium based cells. Back when Apple was still shipping batteries with memory issues, they made a utility that would drain the battery completely to assist in doing this. But Lithium batteries don't have memory issues... or am I missing something?

It is true about the battery size. I have the new Alu and the battery is much smaller then my Ti550 battery.

In System Prefs --> Network, view the Network port configurations, and uncheck whichever things you want to turn off and apply it.
