    End of Line

I read it on a macrumors news article that someone took apart their Alu 15in and showed some pictures of the processor which says 7447. I'll try to find the pictures and will post them.

And it boosts Matsu's post count solely on the basis of prideful egocentrism. It isn't as if he has been the only person who has been saying that G5 powerbooks are a ways away. LOTS of people have been trying to get the point across that G5 powerbooks are still a ways away. You't think that Matsu was the lone crusader for sane release dates. I mean congratulations Matsu, you managed to take credit for what is pretty obvious...

I do however think that mr Jobs is being conservative in his timeline. That is certainly what I would do in his shoes. There is no way that he is going to give a release date that doesn't have several months of extra time to take into consideration all the problems that can crop up in a new laptop. I think that we will see G5 powerbooks for the back to school buying season.

It is going to take some tweaking. The G5 does run very hot now, especially @ 2.0 Ghz. macosrumors was correct insaying that the G5 would have to be throttled down to 1.2-3Ghz to achieve portable heat expenditure tolerability. The 1.6Ghz G5 running in a well-ventalated G5 Box still heats the 4-5 inch heat sink up, although it does seem to run cool by today's standards.

So actually putting a non-conductive [url=http://www.integrity-pc.com/order/Description.cfm?Item=121]liquid cooling[/a] system in there wouldn't be too bad an idea.

But then it becomes a dependency, if the fluid should leak out, your computer may become useless, and that's useless in the I've-overheated-my-computer-to-the-fying-point-useless. I'm sure sensors could detect whether that system has failed, but still if the processor ran cool in the first place, not so much of dependencies on other systems to keep yours cool.

I reckon we'll have G5 iBooks end of next week. Yeah.

It's called Gateway syndrome. It happens to every gateway owner.

    It applies as so:

Price Paid ∝ (proportional to) Dissapointment

with every dollar representing 1% dissapointment

what gives, seems like a desert for us looking for a future for the g4. if moto sells off some of its assets where does this place the g4, 50-100mz upgrades will slow apple down and allow pc to go 3 and then what. there is more future to the g3 as per these forums then the g4 so what happens to the PB on the pro side. do you think pro's will wait a year and see their friends go 2.8 and 3 in a notebook??? I believe that SJ is bluffing to get you to buy now and not wait. can a "g4" something regardless of moto or not will last 12-14 months??? I don't understand any of this.....so should i look forward to the g3+ update. Does IBM have a chip apple could call "g4" and build PB before a g5 laptop???? Moto could have or has a meltdown. I just don't believe those interviews.

OK, I received the "Benq Joybook 5000" link, unpackaged it and here are the first impressions:

It was so freaking slow, I feared something was wrong. Turned out, the virus-scanner scanned each and every file I moved around, gobbling up CPU cycles like mad. Solution: turn off the scanner. Good thing there are no viruses on Windows :-/

It is butt ugly, faux chrome on plastic, curves and lines everywhere, an optical nightmare. It looks cheap, it smells cheap, it is cheap to the touch.

Screen is very good, very bright, esp if compared to the one of my old Ti400. Not just differences, it's a completely different world.

WLAN built in, works like a charm, no problems whatsoever integrating it with my working Airport setup.

Eclipse (Java IDE) flies on this thing, the all-in-all snappyness is great (Window resizing is a dream). Quite silent since the Pentium M is idling most of the time, but it does not take much for it to reach 100% CPU and then the fan comes on immediately (on my Ti, it takes some time after the CPU hits 100% for the fan to get going). Fan is not very loud but unpleasant.

So, after two days trying the thing, I can say it works, it's an eyesore, but will tide me over till Apple offers me a compelling notebook again.

A nice touch: they include a protective cloth envelope in a 1150,- EUR notebook - something Apple is not capable of.

Does it work? Yes. Does it blow anything Apple has to offer (for that price) out of the water? Yes. Is it enough to make me switch? Quite likely not - but Apple needs to learn some lessons building longrunning, cool laptops (the irony...).

For me the final question is "Do I wait?". I will be able to afford a Powerbook in a couple months and was looking into the G4. But with the announcement of G5's I'm very confused about whether I should buy the G4 or wait for the G5's. I'm going to college next fall and thats by when I think I'll need a laptop, hence hopefully I'll be decided to wait it out w/ a cheap windows notebook, or I'll have a G4.

Thanks for any suggestions you might be able to offer.

If you really don't need it untill next fall, I would wait untill next fall. Also, if you really don't need it in the beginning of september, I'd wait until at least this time next year, check this future hardware forum and see if there's strong agreement that something is coming down the pike. Apple has a history of updating the powerbooks approx sept. Last year it took a little longer but that seemed to have something to do with the port holdout on the west coast. By then, even if its still a g4, the top end maching will be at least a 1.66 ghz if not more, maybe even 1.8 or 2ghz. I'm sure a g5 would be great but depending on what you're going to do with your machine it really doesn't matter. I'm typing this on a g4 350 sawtooth and I'm perfectly happy about it. Unless you're going to do a lot of video editing, photoshop work (which is still great on a g4) or serious music with tons and tons of tracks and effects, you probably won't hurt at all from not having a g5, and the 1st generation g5s may also have major kinks to be worked out. By then the 3rd or 4th generation albook g4s will be even better. Either way you will have an awesome machine, then ask for one again 4 years later as a graduation present (buy it while you're still enrolled for the discount of course) by then you'll know more what your interests are, you might want a screaming fast desktop g6 by then. Good luck. Peace. Glenn

So I wonder if that means apple is going to whet our appetites with an ultra-portable.

I think waiting until next fall is a great idea, a future generation G4 would also be a great buy even if its not the G5. Seeing as I will not be doing the sort of serious work your suggesting, I think I'll hold out and wait.

    THanks for your suggestions Glenn.

i say that apple should introduce a liquid ammonia cooling system. other laptops use water as their cooling system, but liquid ammonia has the highest specific heat of any liquid or solid. it's about .5J/g higher than water. And there's not going to be just a single gram of coolant in it. The more coolant, the better the efficiency when compared to water.

plus it's apple. come on, why wouldn't apple be the first to come out with something weird and cool sounding like a liquid ammonia coolant? that's what they're good at

Probably not, since ammonia is a toxic substance and is banned from aircraft. Would't that be good for apple, a laptop you can't take with you when you travel.
