I completely agree. The iMac is visually stunning, but totally lacking when it comes to the price/performance ratio. My theory is that the iMac and PB's are stuck in the G4 hell that desktops were in six months ago. I wish that Apple would drop their prices $100 to $200 to make these machines worthwhile because for right now, it is all about the G5 and the portables. At least the iBook understands that cheap (cost) is a good thing.
In Europe, they did lower the cost of an iMac. Now the 17" model costs 200 euros less than it did before the update, and because of that I think I will buy one. I really like the adjustable display and the compact size. I have also considered buying a 12" powerbook with a third party 17" LCD display, but the iMac costs less, is a little bit faster, has a faster hard drive and includes a super drive, so I think it's better value than the 12" powerbook, since I don't really need portability.
laptops will grow in market share, but desktops are more robust and it allows you to get a nice looking office furniture arrangement, i for one would consider the emac, gee 4x superdrive and low cost and looks good, not as good as the iMac, but for features it's a steal. with networking growing more homes will see less hassle adding differnt types, laptops and desktops. Ill says this that the iMac on the desks looks a lot better than anything else, keep the iMac just to show off apple's design greatnes. is emac airport extreme ready???
You see i will upgrade my iMac dv400 in about a year and want superdrive and large HD so i would think that the the cost of "style" is less with the emac, and my corner desk will fit it.
Can apple survive as only a laptop maker???? just on a cost basis parts for laptops are more expensive so tell me how, what apple wants to do is gain market share for both, gee whiz as a family or business person gets a laptop why not add desktop, as time goes on more families and pro's get more computers so it's not unheard of to have 2 laptops and 2 desktops in a family of 4-5, I have a "friend" that has 8 computers, older ones go to children he has them all over the house. with all these virus's families and business are looking for an alternative and apple is such an alternative.
I for one want whatever puts more macs of all types out there especially with business and schools because they can drive the impressions and attitudes of the market, and dispell windows myths.
