i told all of you long before IBM delievered its 970 chips that they would run hot.
i told you that they would be too hot for anything other than a powermac, but many of you blinded by your lust for CPU power didnt want to see it.
back in the day......apple put G3's in all of their products.
remember when the imac came out?
g3 processor
blue and white powermac?
g3 processor
powerbooks?
g3 processor
and it was the fastest processor out!
faster than any PC processor and it ran cool.
fastfoward to 2003.
we have a problem.
motorola is no longer making the fastest CPU available.
apple has had to move on to ibm,a capable manufacturer of powerpc cpus no less,but.........
hotter.
many of you lust for the g5 in a powerbook, that is understandable but is it easily achievable?
oh...we have all heard of liquid "cooling" schemes and the like but really...not the most elegant solution wouldnt you say?
my suggestion is one of two things.....
wait for the mythical "750vx" processors to become available and drop those suckers in a powerbook or simply go duals with the motorla processors.
i do think the g5 processors will eventually make it to the powerbook range but later rather than sooner.
as for the rumours of INTEL coming out with 5 ghz processors anytime soon....i seriously doubt it.
simple because of ....once again...HEAT.
there are rumours that INTEL is having problems with its 0.09um process,if this is true dont hold your breath waiting on intels next generation CPUs.
and i have another prediction......IBM will catch up to AMD processors in terms of clock speed next year and APPLE's powermac range WILL become the undisputed performance champions next year.
MARK MY WORDS!
good evening!

Also a page 2 story at Macrumors says:
"An anonymous/unverified report claims that Apple has already been seeded sample 90nm PowerPC 970s this month. Reportedly, they run from 1.8GHz to 3.2GHz and heat production is significant improved, with a 2GHz at only 34W, down from 57W. The 3.2GHz chip reportedly at 71W.
Target volume production for 90nm is reported to be in Q2 of 2004. Heat considerations are still a major issue for the upcoming PowerBook and dual G4's are still considered a possibility."
The first part is straight from an IBM spokesman... sounds real promising for G5 Powerbooks by midyear 2004... perhaps even duals.
