the newer PB definitely feels different. i spent enough time holding the older one to know. LOL. i actually preferred the look/feel of the older one, as the newer one seems clunkier somehow. let me what your side-by-side comparison unveils in the design differences.

I love my 15" PB and have had no problems to date. I still think the smooth handling contours of the blackbird PB G3 pismo version is unmatched in design, but I have had a wonderful time running my entire network via Airport and playing with a Cinema Display etc, etc.

Mac's Girl, I look forward to your report.

I think what he's getting at is some of us have new machines. In my case, my machine was repaired once, so I qualified for a new one instead of a second repair.

they asked me right off the bat if i wanted to get a replacement without ever trying the repair first. they didnt offer you a choice the first time around?

It is good to see that Apple is now repairing properly. It is nice that they give you the choice of replacement for the whole machine. This also saves them money.

I think that the issue of the new Al models being a cheaper or not as nice design physically, is true. I think the Titanium ones look and feel much better. I am still having problems with my Titanium......

CD drive has fried and I tried to install Panther last week and my entire computer is non functional!!! It froze during installation. The Apple repair shop here in Arizona had no idea what to do. They suggested paying $450 for Apple to repair it!

I have decided to return to my Vaio. I have had it for two years w/o one problem.

I love my Mac, but I don't love Apple.

    cheers

No, the first time, they offered me a repair. The second time, I was going to push for a replacement, but they offered before I could insist.

One week, so far, so good.

i've noticed this thread losing steam as of late. are people's powerbooks coming back well repaired, and are the repairs holding?

I'm hoping the slowdown in posts here is due to there being no more new cases.

I just ordered a 15" over the phone from the UK Apple Store (which is located in Ireland) because they assured me (the information was volunteered, I didn't have to ask) that there was a known problem with the screen, and that the problems have been solved and that they are now manufacturing working units.

Previously when I inquired about stock they told me that they didn't have any because of a screen problem that was being dealt with. Sounds genuine to me. (perhaps this is old news, but as far as I knew Apple hadn't officially admitted to a problem.)

It'll take 2-3 weeks to arrive apparently, so I guess I'll have to wait till then to find out if it's actually true.

No mention was made of the other quality control issues such as faulty latches, excessive heat, monitor spanning, etc.

Are weeks longer in Ireland? Or do they only count working days?

jfried has a keyboard issue, as do i. so far, my latch is working wonderfully and the screen is great. no 3rd party ram issues either. i havent sent it in for repair yet. other than the two of us, i havent heard of anyone else with a keyboard problem. havent tried monitor spanning, and i dont think the heat is a problem-- it's just the way it is.

Well, its been 2.5 weeks now since i got my 15 AL 1.25 back from apple and no problems with the screen so far - its perfect - no white spots anymore, no dead or stuck pixels, its just fine!

same goes for everything else about this laptop (apart from the A key being a touch obstinent at times... but that's me being pedantic).

This is one fine machine now that they have fixed the screen and replaced the battery

didnt mean to revive this thread on purpose...

my charging problems came back, and i discovered if i jiggled the end of the power cord where it connects to the port, it starts charging. its not the flexible part of the cord, though. it might even be a problem inside the machine itself which, as the apple guy just told me, would require a logic board replacement and i would be better off just getting a new machine. they offered me a replacement or repair choice again, and said if i opted for repair first i wouldnt be able to get a replacement later if the repair didnt solve anything. (does this make sense??) but i have to go to the apple store first to test out my PB using a different power cord. let's hope i just need a new cord.

as for the keyboard issue, they said they it could also be replaced at the apple store instead of sending it back.

keep your fingers crossed for me... i dont want a new logic board or PB... i am sick of swapping and starting over!

(I thought I replied to this already.... my post has become the biggest vaporware since G5 Powerbooks.)

I don't understand --- you were offered either a new 'book or a repair? And you took the repair? Why? Is it because you'd have to wait for for a new machine? If so I guess I understand that, but you should be able to get them to require the return after you receive the new one. I think you need to get a new one though --- a bit of suffering now is better than continued problems later, eh?

i didnt actually choose anything at this point. they just updated their notes regarding the problem. i can still send it back if i want to, and i would defn ask for them to send me a new PB first.

i just like the screen a lot on the PB i have now. one stuck pixel in an inconspicuous location. the screen backlighting is remarkably even. if a new keyboard and a new power adapter is the answer to the my problems, then i dont want to swap. but if it's worse than that, i want a new PB of course. thats why i am going to try another power cord and do some more testing.

btw, on your new white spot-less machine, how's the screen backlighting? im just wondering if all of the new batch of PBs have improved upon this minor issue.
