Thought i 'd post a thread about it. Does anyone have news about it. Haven't heard anything the last week. Can someone bring us all on to speed. How were the performance tweaks and the tests with it?

Haven't heard anything on how fast that cluster ended up being, and if or where they now stand on the Top 500 list. Anyone got any scoops?

    One thing: It's VTech.

I came in ready to post why Honda's suck.

I think we'll hear in a few weeks. It hasn't been very long, and I bet the folks behind it haven't yet mounted a meaningful project.

Heh, I think twinturbo was talking about Va Tech's 1100 G5 Cluster, not the Tech company VTech.

Well, from the Top500 Site, it says:

    "22nd TOP500 List

The 22nd TOP500 List will be introduced during the Supercomputer Conference (SC2003) in Phoenix, AZ November 15-21, 2003.

Submission deadline for entries is October 1st, 2003. Instructions and Call for Participation can be found here"

And we all saw/drooled over the pictures, so they probably submitted it on time. I guess we'll hear how they did on the 15th

Incidentally! a quick browse shows my university at #38 Self-made, 512-2.4GHz Xeons, peaking out at 2457 Gflops... I've never even heard of it until now...

I don't know who to root for... VTech's got 1100 Macs, but UofT's got my tuition dollars...

    Hi,

on BBCWorld is a report about the building of the Supercomuter at Virginia Tech.

How could you not go with 1100 Macs? Are you crazy or something. And just a side note, I would be pretty pissed at UofT for takin all your money, even if it is worth it.

found this through macbidouu.. don't miss the video: Ian's report. Works only with VLC-player here but without audio.

    17.6 TFlops!

that will be the 2nd place!

i hope this is correct - that'd be a huge step for apple :-)

thanks for the links amarone! This may be very interesting. Apple may end up getting a lot of orders for G5 for similar such supercomputers.

Slashdot has an article running about the cluster now. Mainly relating to the BBC report, but from what they say the VT cluster may be ranked #2!

Yeah, that /. article is here, supposedly, the VT cluster gets about 17.6 TeraFlops (!!!!!!!).

Note that that is peak performance. It'll probably come in around 3rd which is roughly what they expected.

That would put them at the #2 spot, I would assume.

This is very good. I'm seeing some great advertising opportunities here, Apple.

And I just realized something- the Virginia Tech Supercomputer will be expandable and scalable, so they can keep up.

I'd say this is a good precursor to an eight-way G5 machine.

Just a question, why wouldn't Pixar build a cheap cluster like this for video rendering? It's cheap and apparently pretty damn fast.

who's to say they haven't or aren't building one right now?

and for those who though this Virginia thing was a dumb move when they had paying customers waiting to get their duals, it looks like it's paying off well now, and everyone has their duals, so all's right in the world.

I know it sounds super duper, but as I see Xbench tests of dual G4 and Dual G5, the G4 has 5,10 Gflops altivec basic and G5 just 4gflops. So theoretical the G4 would have a maximum of 15,9324 Tflops I guess in the same Vtech cluster config ,so the possibility for a supercomputer was their all along.

    But still Hoera for Apple.

I did some calculations and from the theoretical 17,6 Tflops there would remain about 80% of it so +- 15 Tflops, i did my calculations with the other top 5 supercomputer and saw how much of their max was left for the official ranking. If you don't believe me, you can do the math for your self.
