This thread is sad, not in spite of the fact that it was started by a Catholic but *because* it was started by a Catholic.

Have a heart / some perspective here. He may have biffed on issues like birth control in third world countries, and he frankly is not likely to have had full control of things since the recent scandals came down, due to his frailty and age. The fact that he's still in power is a flaw of the system, not of him personally.

I'd encourage you guys to read up on how he got to be where he is, starting way back around the time of the great war. He doesn't deserve this kind of sarcastic treatment, based on his lifetime of work. Not that his good works were as numerous (no one's were) but did you guys take bets on Mother Theresa when she fell ill?

    Common...

...not for a while. He has a full med team following around everywhere he goes with defibrillators, oxygen tanks and who knows what drugs. I'm sure he has a health check every morning and probably has had several full-body CTs and MRIs over the past few years.

I'd give him at least a few more years, perhaps a decade.

Moogs, I was "raised Catholic," that doesn't mean I'm Catholic now.

Of course, in previous threads I have learned that a lot of people think that no-one has the right to be critical of a religion unless they were in it, so I thought I'd declare my history. The church failed to earn my respect for various reasons, but the Pope is one of them. To be fair, I don't hold any more animosity toward John Paul than any other deluded person who pretends to speak on behalf of God, and I don't wish him any pain.

The Pope as a position, however, is worthy of mocking. With this Pope's death a new, lifelong dictator of the church will emerge with the power to decide what is a sin and what isn't, who goes to hell and who doesn't. It's all very silly and disturbing.

As an elapsed Catholic I hope the old bird goes quietly in his sleep. He is in a lot of pain, and I do not wish him that. (There are a few I would tho') He definitely has made some big screw-ups in my opinion, But hey who am I to say, I don't lead a billion followers now do I? Over the 25 years he has been Poping, he has put a 105 voting cardinals in place out of the 130. So it prolly will be a doctrinal conservative. But who knows? Maybe it will be Al Sharpton! They don't have to pick from the college of Cardinals. I think it is time for a new young hip Pope, maybe like Maddona. It would be a nice tie in don't yah think? Besides she could bring another 250,000,00o new followers to church right away.

If anyone needs me I'll be smoking a turd in hell....:

Nordy (can I call you "Nordy"? ):

I understand your general feeling on the matter; I concur that the concept of infallibility is ridiculous. But again, I see this as a problem with the system -- the Church itself. John Paul has done many good works and helped many, many people during his lifetime. He's not some pompous televangelist pumping himself up every chance he gets. He's always been a humble man and a servant of peace.

My lousy memory tells me he has publically stood against the second Iraq war and other skirmishes that could've resulted in more bloodshed then they did... I just find the notion of a "Pope Watch" to be rather cruel. Don't heap an entire religion's problems onto one man's back; heap them onto those individuals who caused the problems. Just as I can say President Bush has made some dumb mistakes, I don't then heap all of America's ills onto his back. Because he didn't solve many of them, doesn't mean he caused them.

I think that every church needs a leader who has John Paul's demeanor. If they were to continue the Pope tradition without the claim to infallibility, but rather simply name him as the final human authority on dilemmas within the Church - ones that cannot be solved otherwise - then it would be better. Sort of look up to him as a Supreme Court Justice rather than a direct agent of God. Very wise but not infallible IOW, but nonetheless more of an authority than any Cardinal. It's an easy distinction to make. I just hope they have the guts to make it next time around.

Nordy is fine. I'm with Segovis on this one. All his good deads can't diminish the fundamental damage he has done. Fostering the spread of HIV, starvation, intolerance, thwarting life saving medical research, and not to forget perpetuating this sham when any honorable, thoughtful man would recognize that he is, indeed, falliable.

"He meant well," just doesn't fly with me. What's the saying? The path to hell is paved...

This thread is sick, not because someone criticisize the pope, but because someone is making bet about someone death.

And betting on someone death is really, really bad taste.

What next ? date of death of Reagan, of a pop star ?

That's enough this thread is therefore closed.

There is a legitmate question hidden in this thread : does the pope should continue to rule the church in his current shape, or should he resign or at best make a sort of regency ?

If someone is interested by this type of question, or any others, feel free to make an another thread.
