You think this type of stuff ever gets old for them? (new virus)

so i get this in my inbox tonight.

http://us.mcafee.com/virusInfo/defau...virus_k=100719

nice little write up. it's a Trojan and redirects your browser to pages that then install malicious code on your machine.

it's a known exploit for some time, but MS has no patch for it. Norton won't catch it yet (what our University uses) so i'm in for a fun day tomorrow.

seeing as this is the umpteenth one this month, do you think windows users ever just get fed up with the constant parade of problems?

You'd think that Windows users would get tired of it. I know I'd start going nuts if I constantly had to be downloading patches and fixes, and worrying about if the latest mail into my inbox is infected.

Maybe Apple needs to capitalize on this:

"When viruses travel around the internet, we pretty much do NOTHING about them...because there's no need to. Mac OS X. Stop downloading patches and get back to being productive."

You're a Mac user, and that says some very good things about you indeed.

Windows... "aficionados" like the suffering that comes with Gates' Excreta. Don't worry about them.

Laugh at them and enjoy the spectacle.

That might not work so well. People are used to having to patch systems when using Windows. If Apple says they don't do anything, people might get the feeling that Apple's computers are vulnerable.

    Maybe something like:

"When viruses travel around the internet, we remain unharmed, because the viruses can't infect our computers. Stop downloading patches and get back to being productive."

    I like that part.

But I also like this approach

There are over 50,000 known viruses for the windows operating system....and counting.

There are 0 for Mac OS X

And you are still having a trouble choosing?

Oh, I'm not worried about them. The "aficionados" should know better and if they want to participate in those (frankly) masochistic practices, fine.

I'm concerned about the average family who bought a PC so their kids can research dinosaurs for a class project or buy a record player on eBay. Those people shouldn't have to put up with that crap.

I've known too many people who've said, "Oh, we ended up getting the XYZ virus on our machine. Wiped out the entire hard drive. I didn't have time to download the patch before it happened."

Those people should be using Macs and never look back.

Some people have choices and some don't. If you're a developer you have to have the platform that your employer/customers use. So, tired of it or not, theres nothing that some people can do but hope that Mac catches on.

I think the number of virus' for Windows is up to 71,000 and yes so far the # for OS X is ZERO, nadda, none.

Heres how I see it...wintell users don't just have problems with viruses (71,000 to 0, DANG!), they have problems with everything. Blue screen of death. Nuff said. My brother has a Vaio, he has upgraded it and upgraded it (graphics card, new HD after his failed, new speekers, new keyboard/mouse after his broke, moved to Win2k after he realized how much XP sucked.) and he still has worlds of problems. His comp can baraly connect to our home network becuse he has to reconfigure it all the time. And at least once a week he won't let anyone touch the comp becuase he is afaraid of the newest virus. My cube is 2.5 years older than his Viao, I've only upgraded the ram and HD (it was time for more space, no issues with the old drive) and my cube runs circles around his Viao. He has said his next comp will be a Mac. He switched over to Wintell for gaming about a year ago. He regrets it everyday.

I love being a mac user, plain and simple the best computers in the world. Rock solid OS...just rock solid. I LOVE MACS!!!

Hate to ruin it for everyone, but Macs can get hit by some Word Marco viruses. But that's Microsoft's fault.

Still, compared to the everyday threat to Wintel machines, that's negligable (sp?).

I have heard of OS X viruses where apple scripts are placed on your system, but have not ever heard of a single user who has been affected by them.

I always wonder why I bother with virus checkers for OS X - you never seem to see one. Maybe I should write a "virus" checker and sell it for millions - a simple "Hello World" program springs to mind!

And the person who wrote the virus is innocent?

actually, at least the new version of Norton catches Windoes viruses. very useful when checking for viruses on PC's drives.

I have been hit with 1 virus in my life, it's when I was on a Mac.

99% of the freaking out about viruses and security issues isn't about actual infections/break-ins. Our IT department damn near shut down the entire UT network in response to the Blaster worm, which NO ONE was infected with.

Are you serious? Your brother has hardware problems. I haven't had a blue screen of death since the late 90's. My windows machines run for months without reboot. As for his virus problem, tell him to stop downloading questionable software and installing it on his pc. questionable software=anything hacker related like peer to peer thiefware or porn site plug ins.

Tell him to get Norton Antivirus 2004. Keep auto-update and auto-protect turned on and his dumb ass will never have a problem with viruses.

Don't click "Yes" when a website says to install "SuperTerrific HappyFun Software!" and his dumb ass will never have a problem with malware. And if he is dumb enough to click "Yes" run SpyBot or AdAware.

This shit isn't hard. People just need some serious beatings with the ClueStick.

Windows9x sucks, but since Win2k the biggest threat to the platform is the dumbass sitting at the keyboard.

I can hard lock my XP box at work any time I want (And sometimes when I don't). Granted windows is getting more stable, but still not 100%. Its ridiculous though I can't even bring a new install up on the network. I have to burn all the serious patches and the service packs on a cd and install them first before I can put it on the network. Not a big deal, but stupid nonetheless.

I'm a network admin, and not "clueless", yet I had 36 pieces of spyware running on my XP box. I was totally floored. I never allow any direct x software to install (other than MS Update and the Quicktime installer). Its just a pain and a waste of time to costantly have to worry about critical updates, virus definition updates, and spyware for an office of 60 people.
