applenut, I think it's been well established that the Finder is crap. People have been harping about that since the Public Beta. Does it help to gripe and complain to each other about it? No. Does it help to find alternative solutions that DO work? Yes.

I disagree. Panther Finder is actually very good. Not workstation material, though. But very good. I think its much better than OS 9's Finder.

However the ONE area I'll have to say must be written by monkey's throwing code at the wall is handling of large numbers of files.

...and refreshing directory contents from connected servers. I sometimes have to disconnect from the LAN altogether and reconnect or at times I have to reboot. And why do we still not have a refresh command?

But I digress. File manipulation is significantly improved in Panther, but it sill need a lot of work.

Anyone ever use XShelf? It works to move files. I use it from time to time and it's pretty convenient when having to move lots of stuff. Just a thought.

XShelf doesn't fix the big problem in Panther. The Finder stalls as you are dragging the files. The problem isn't in the move operation; it's in the GUI dragging operation. Thus, dragging files to XShelf would take just as long as dragging to another folder.

Besides, XShelf has a maximum capacity of 20. We need something 100 times larger than that.

    Wow!

Luckily I have never had to do this on a regular basis, so I haven't noticed this problem myself. But I just did a similar test with moving 315 PDFs from one folder to another and it took about 20-30 seconds. The weird thing is the Finder actually shows the files disappearing alphabetically from the folder I moved them from (this was in Column View).

I tried the same operation from the terminal and it was instantaneous. My recommendation would be, if you can use the terminal easily for what you are doing to give it a try.

This kind of thing has frustrated me since 10 came out (along with the time it took to let you rename a file - but this is fixed now).

I still don't think the copying is that much better though, even in 7b85.

I have about 2000 mame roms. When I got to move them it takes ages. I have to do it in chunks of about 100 at a time. I select them all (apple a) then as soon as I go to click drag to move them I get beach ball for three or four minutes. This is ridiculous.

Same when I am managing my 15 gigs of mp3s, copying them from one drive to another or partially copying them. It takes an age.

In case you're wondering, the relevant terminal commands are:

mv: for anything which doesn't have resource forks (just about everything, especially graphics)

MvMac (note capitalisation): for anything which does have resource forks etc, this will work. It won't move stuff between volumes or filesystems though.

or you could even use rsync if you really felt the need... (and file synchronisation is important)

typing "man [command name]" at the command-line will give you an idea of the many options these commands give you.

one of the cool things is selection of files by wildcard characters (* and ?), which might well speed up the process of selecting all those files in the first place...

sounds like panther is a winner though. i wonder if the changes to text rendering are part of the reason for the difference in the speed of the gui operation?

Have any of you tried dragging images/pictures from the desktop into a finder window (like into the "pictures" folder) in Panther? It will crash the Finder 8 out of 10 times..

Do you have the preview icons on in the Finder? I think if I turn those off - I'm fine. I believe the issue is with the preview icons. But yes...I get this too.

I had no idea this was such a problem. Not acceptable. I hope they fix this before 10.4. They kind of owe anyone that paid for 10, 10.1, 10.2, and/or 10.3 this. I am sorry you have to work that way, that sucks! In the meantime you can look call using Terminal...8)
