10.4, anythoughts? (read: Harry Carry)
With the release of Panther only a few short days away, there has gotta be thoughts on what 10.4 what will be like.
Will Piles finally make it? Was that supposed to be a feature of 10.4?
Theme of 10.4, all metal? multi-themed?
Will 10.4 have the option to compile JAVA into bytecodes, then save as an executable, eliminating the "need" for C++?
I'm just using my imagination with a little bit of reality, only the size of a rolly-polely. I also like the idea of the addition of HotDogs, just think everytime you'd click on something you'd get a HotDog.

I don't think piles ever existed. And the concept is, well, shitty. Haha, I crack myself up.

I *SO* wish that one or the other (or both) would become an honest-to-goodness standard.
Yeah, Java's an ANSI-standard-but-not-really. Not good enough.

Yeah it'll have Piles to use on your new iTablets...
Well, at least Apple has a patent for piles. I mean, it's not sheer fantasy. They put some work into it. I haven't heard of even a prototype tablet though. (Although Ive has admitted to trying to put the computer guts into a Cinema Display: with mixed results according to him. But that's not quite an iTablet).

*WOOSH!*
*sigh* Stupid Florida "eight runs in one inning" Marlins...
Kerry Wood, don't mess this up...
Oh, and I think Apple will find a way to better integrate iCal, Address Book and Mail, maybe even to the point of making them one app. Seriously, I'm not just saying that to justify my mostly-hijack of a post.

ever watch SNL?
"If you could choose between being the top scientist in your field or getting Mad Cow Disease, which would you choose?"
"Uh... I would of course want to be the top scientist in my field, why would anyone ever want Mad Cow Disease?"
"Oh, that's a relief. I was afraid you were going to choose the Mad Cow. I guess I'm a worrier, that's all."
Anyway... I would like to see a cut & paste feature for moving files. This was discussed a while ago - Windows XP has it, where you cut a file and then paste it else where to move it. A number of people said that then cutting another file without pasting the first one would destroy the first file you had cut, but it was pointed out that the file isn't deleted until it's pasted in the new location. Then a few die hard Apple-defenders started complaining that cutting and pasting for files was inconsistent, which is somewhat true but I still like the way it works in Windows, especially since Windows is centered around single-window file navigation (much like column view in OS X).
I still think this should be implemented. Copy/Paste is silly unless you're moving stuff from a secondary or network volume when the file would always be copied anyway. If you're using copy/paste to move things around within one disk, it's useless because you have to go back and delete the original which defeats the time saving purpose of using copy/paste in the first place.
People will again say it's inconsistent behavior, but what ELSE are the copy/cut/paste commands being used for when a file is highlighted? You could make use of them as they are now or, theoretically, one could simply add a few more commands like "Pick Up" and "Drop Off." Unfortunately this would require two new keyboard shortcuts and also a couple new toolbar buttons. It would be useful though, and I think Apple could do a very interesting job of implementing it - don't just make the original transparent like in XP... they could do all sorts of animation stuff, like pop out a drawer and place all the picked up files in there. Anything would work as long as you can easily see when you have "picked up" files.
Just thought of something neat! Maybe you could have it so when you option click a file, instead of just selecting it, it picks up the file and puts a little icon of a generic file next to the cursor. Option-click to pick up, option-click to put down. There could be a cool animation for this. Alternately, a file could be selected and then you could use a keyboard command - either command-(something) or one of the function keys.
I think it would also be cool if the file system kept track of whenever you moved or changed a file and then reported it to all applications when you open them. So when you're working on a web page or something, you would actually be able to move the files used by your web page around and it would automatically account for the changes - and this would be a function of the OS, so we wouldn't have to rely on programmers to implement it in their applications. Could it work? I have no idea, but it seems like a neat idea. It would also eliminate broken aliases as they would be immediately discovered.

Luca, you realize that you can copy and paste the file NAME too (something that Windows doesn't do). This is useful in a few circumstances. The bottom line is that the copy/cut/paste metaphor is used for TEXT. It doesn't make sense as a paradigm for files too. But that's another topic of discussion entirely.
Don't you copy the name by hitting return or clicking directly on the name so it's highlighted? Does it also do that if you DON'T have the name highlighted?
If you'd like to say that it applies to text, so be it. Then a feature I would like in 10.4 would be a "pick up" and "drop off" command.

Umm, you can use drag -n- drop to do this. You know this, correct? Heck, they even brought back spring-loaded folders from the dead, and that's perfect for moving files around your hard drive.
