"The cluster made up of 2,200 G5 processors has reached 10.28 teraflops. This places it behind the 5,120 processor Earth Simulator system - 35.9 teraflops - and the 8,160 processor ASCI Q system - 13.8 teraflops . . . Some last minute tweaking may occur, but Jack Dongarra, a researcher at the University of Tennessee and top 500 official, said the Big Mac cluster is all but assured third place."
What happened the last 2 weeks on the supercomputer horizon, we'll see in 3 more days at the supercomputer conference. I guess 'Big Mac is still on 3rd place, but has gained a Tflop with additional and final tweaking, we'll see
Just a side note, in my morning paper yesterday they had an article about it. The iPod and iTMS got good reviews also...they seem to be pretty mac friendly.
Umm... tomorrow's the deadline, right. But the day that I'm really looking forward to is November, 20th (next Wednesday). According to the Supercomputer Conference's schedule, that is the day when the Top 500 list will be presented to the public.
I think this should be on Apple's front page for a week or two. "We're #3" aint so bad.
They should also get that damn ugly Dell laptop off of VT's front page and put up a link to apple. They just managed to score several million dollars of supercomputing contracts (so I suspect, at least).
It seems like if someone made a 5,120 g5 cluster it would beat the earth simulator up.
You aren't reading the right data. The Rpeak value is all but meaningless. You want the Rmax. Even if a 5120 CPU G5 cluster did enter the fray and scaled linearly from the current figures, it would be waaay behind the Earth Simulator.

You are right and even the Rmax is only a benchmark. Thus in real application computing, the difference between the earth simulator and the V-tech could be even wider.
Kickaha and Amorph couldn't moderate themselves out of a paper bag. Abdicate responsibility and succumb to idiocy. Two years of letting a member make personal attacks against others, then stepping aside when someone won't put up with it. Not only that but go ahead and shut down my posting priviledges but not the one making the attacks. Not even the common decency to abide by their warning (afer three days of absorbing personal attacks with no mods in sight), just shut my posting down and then say it might happen later if a certian line is crossed. Bullshit flag is flying, I won't abide by lying and coddling of liars who go off-site, create accounts differing in a single letter from my handle with the express purpose to decieve and then claim here that I did it. Everyone be warned, kim kap sol is a lying, deceitful poster.
Now I guess they should have banned me rather than just shut off posting priviledges, because kickaha and Amorph definitely aren't going to like being called to task when they thought they had it all ignored *cough* *cough* I mean under control. Just a couple o' tools.
Don't worry, as soon as my work resetting my posts is done I'll disappear forever.

Third? Fourth? On the list?

would be interesting to see if ECC helped, although i'm guessing the next big Mac cluster will be made of G5 Xserves.

So, you guys think we'll see more g5 clusters?

It's in their rotating banner
