I have the Olympus C-750. 4MP and a 10X zoom lens. I love it. Takes great pictures and the zoom is wonderful. My only two complaints might be that the menu system is a little over complicated and I have to remove the batteries to recharge them.
If you're set on a Canon (Canons are a tad overrated IMO, got all the hype though), you might be able to find the G3 near your price range now. The G3 is a great value with its price dropping but that's because supplies are running out; it's been discontinued to give the G5 (more expensive, more Mp but poorer picture quality) a boost. Check online or maybe some local stores have old models they're trying to dump.
