[quote]Do you know where it REALLY looks great? During those segments in that promo video when it's sitting beside Annie Leibovitz and Seal.
Now THAT'S a nice-looking computer, glossy or not!

Those are the 2 spots in the video that I keep watching over and over and over....
Oh, and I'm bad for the day dreaming thing too. I find myself standing by my desk trying to picture in my mind what it will look like... can't wait.
I'm giving serious though to murdering my PC at our front counter in March when the CD-RW model is shipping... (the SuperDrive one is for home).that would be a great office computer for me, and damn, the price is great.
Am I the only one with an unhealthy, disproportionate lust for this new iMac?

Noooo!!! I'm selling my G4 tower and 17" (apple) CRT display, even though they look nice they don't compare to the new iMac. I'm not going to buy until this summer though, since I'm going to England for a semester, oh and I just bougth a TiBook, so I can't afford it either
Isn't it an irritation that once again Apple has announced a new product and is now making us wait?! I know this is just New Product Frustration, but it can't be that difficult for them to synchronize production runs with product announcements.
There must have been thousands of people who would have jumped into their car and headed to the nearest Apple Store with Visa card in hand if they'd been available instantly.
Now people have time to read the negative reviews and change their minds. Or by the time the new machines are actually available in numbers, the Mac addicts will decide to wait because there might be a revision "any day now".
I saw the 2 iMacs at the Palisades store also. I couldn't hear the fan and it didn't seem warm to the touch.
The screen was easy to move yet seemed very sturdy and strong. The table that had the two iMacs had a new 14 inch iBook between them.....which kind of ruined the display. The iBook is SO UGLY.
I can't believe how big and bulky this thing is. Eman is right, the space around the keyboard is terrible.
The iMac seems like it is frosted, not glossy for sure.
The screen is amazing. I'm probably selling my G4 tower to get one as well.
Hopefully, I'm going to go see one of these cuties in person today.
Although, I've called my local Apple store TWICE yesterday, once at about 1pm and then again at around 6:30pm last night, and NOBODY answered...ever!
Shouldn't a business always have someone there to pick up the phone?
I was calling to CONFIRM (haha...) that they do indeed have a display model up and running, because it's about a 25-30 mile drive I'd rather not make if I don't really have to.
Can anyone remember who first reported the new iMac's codename was "Kiva"? It was months and months ago, and I don't remember if it was someone here or a rumor site.
1. they have lots in the stores for people to walk out with one
2. they offer all price ranges....right now only the people who want superdrive (or can't wait any longer ) are buying them....
i can't wait...i love in the video when seal first moves the screen around and groans with pleasure...i plan to do the same thing when mine arrives... g
What's "kiva" and how does it relate to the new iMac?
I remember reading about that code name as well, but I never found out what it meant.
Does it mean "lamp" or "sunflower" in Samoan or something?

Not quite, but it's still pretty good. A kiva is apparently a dwelling which was used by some Native American groups, and looks almost exactly like the base of the new iMac. Round and domed. I'm trying to find a picture online of one that's not in state of archaeological disrepair.
As I recall, Kiva is a bowl- or dome- shaped thing. In Hawaiian(?).
I, for one, am not in the least bit tempted by the new iMac. Not one tiny little bit. As I said before the keynote, my Cube is just fine and I have no plans to replace it. None whatsoever. It'll do just fine. Really. So I don't have any visions of a small, svelte new iMac with a SuperDrive and the monitor just where I want it, perched on my computer desk, smoking my poor old Cu- no, my fast, stalwart, still-new Cube. Dammit.
I don't need an iMac, exactly, but I'm going to get one. And you know the craziest part - especially considering we're talking about Apple here? I want it for its specs more than the design!!!
I'm currently "borrowing" a Power Mac from the office to do a little editing at home, because it's a lot more comfortable than working on my PowerBook.
Now I can have an 800MHz G4 with SuperDrive that'll look great on my desk (Rather than crap under it) and not rival the washer for annoying background noise.

I hear you, Belle. It's a knockout machine at all price points.
And it's the latest in a succession of knockout new designs at attractive price points, too, which gives me hope.
Hey, that's cool about the "kiva" thing! Rounded dome. Yep, that just about says it.
"Rounded dome with a big tall flower sticking out of the top" would've probably given too much away.
Amorph, that was a funny post. At first I thought "wow, here's a guy who DOESN'T dig the new iMac...", then I kept reading your post.
Funny stuff.
MAN, I can't wait to get mine! Aarrrggghhhhh. I just want to fling that screen anywhere I want and use a new keyboard and mouse (I'm still using my original tangerine USB keyboard and hocky puck mouse that my iMac DV came with). And those speakers. Guess I'll hang on to my iSub now too!
Heading down to the Apple Store within the hour to check it out in person for the first time. Salesperson said on the phone that they have display models there, so...
I'll post my impressions/thoughts when I return this evening. Wish I had a digital camera to take with me. Would love to get some nice shots for everyone.
I'll try to note the size, plastics, texture, chrome arm look and feel, display quality, speakers, keyboard and mouse, spin it around and check out the ports and their solidity, etc.
I'm at Palisades again now. I brought 2 of my PC using friends in. Before we went in one of them said "Don't Macs suck?" I said "Wait til we get and and then you tell me". So we went in and I showed them the imac but people were using it so we went over to the iBook (12", I wouldn't dare show them the 14") The kid who thought Macs sucked loved the iBook. Then we went over to the imac after the people were gone. The kid was amazed. He was asking me a lot of questions about it. He also was amazed by the Pro Speakers. All in all, this showed me what the iMac does to a lot of PC users.

Well I know for a fact that it's not "iBook glossy", as a buddy of mine who was at Macworld this week told me yesterday during a phone call.

Right, it's no where near as glossy as the iBook.

I'll try again in a while when they open.
Whoever it was obviously knew something.
