i apologize for doubting you, tloakley. I didn't think many had such large collections of music, but I guess I was wrong. My collection weighs in at a paltry 2.7GBs, but I really can't afford to have much more because of my iBook's 10GB drive. Boy, I really do need that G5. . .
Okay, I was going to be sarcastic and say, 'Who needs a 60 gig iPod..?' But clearly, we have people with 60 year old record collections that span the dawn of time to infinity and beyond.
All legal. Impressive.
Still, with a 60 gig model iPod...surely such capacity opens up avenues for the 'tiny device' to expand its functionality, either as a separate device/add on device/colour screen etc.
At this rate of going. 60 gig iPod. Colour screen. You could fit ten DVD movies on that?
Or at a compressed iPod colour screen rate? 100 movies in your pocket?
Maybe an app that could convert your (legal) dvds onto the iPod?
An 'iMovie' store like the iTunes store?
Within two years, Apple have surely GOT to be looking at downloadable video on some kind of video iPod.
It's a natural extension to me.
Only Apple have the means, the integration and infrastructure to carry it off.
Like they have now. But on a a vPod.
Steve Jobs has said 'He's not sure...' if people want to watch video on tiny screens.
Hmmm. Maybe. But consider long coach journeys. Aeroplane trips. Climbing a mountain and you're holed up in a tent half way up...you're a serial road-tripper. Or you like to be norty and watch Starwars in bed. Hey. I knew someone at college that had a DVD player. One of those mini-ones with titchy screens. Looked cool. But very hot. And noisy device...
Take out the DVD...make it digital format. Put a colour screen in iPod.
I dunno. This whole iPod thing. I see it morphing into a all purpose digital device. It could place movies. But more importantly it could play iPhoto collections. A digital wallet. If people can make a digital camera with an 'iphone' as many cell phone makers are...then where is Apple with a delux vPod that can 'take photos' and play music?
Sony are said to be coming out with a PSX, come Photo, come music playing device by end of next year...for a third of the price of Apple's iPod.
The question is. Where will Apple be by next fall..? Still on a black and white iPod with 'merely' 60 gigs of hard drive?
Surely there is more to come? iPod is in the lead. Hard drive bumps won't suffice in the long term? But I'm not sure for how long that lead will last when Sony and others catch on.
See, thing is, a video pod would be great, but it's not really something I care about right now. I like the iPod for what it is--a great music player with some added perks.
The current iPod has a certain visceral, iconic quality to it that I fear might be sacraficed with a more functional, even "better designed" iPod. Take for example, the original iMac. Even though they sucked compared to the LCD incarnation on nearly every level, the original iMac had that invisible quality that sold circles around the newer, better models. I think the part of the iPod's success is its simplicity..."just a music player." I also agree that the "hipness" of the iPod has mainly to do with the exclusivity its price tag carries. A democratized iPod at $100 might disrupt the core market of hip people who shell out four times that for the cool, high-end player. Bose manages to sell tons of those tiny, simple sound systems, that truly don't sound very good, based purely on their exclusive, high-end identity...the Jones' are sure to be impressesed by a Bose home theater.

i can't see how it's gonna be possible for sony to release such a product at that super low price point, it's been said that PSP will be a cell phone as well.
b.t.w. i'm sure you're talking about PSP and not PSX.
PSX is gonna be in the $500+ range. that's the PS2 + tivo device....
A video Pod will put the iPod pricing near the iBook, for what? So you can view a DVD while walking? If you want to view a movie, it is usually on a long trip or flight. So a notebook is still a better deal. However the iPod can still be used to carry video files even now that you can then play back on remote computers, or notebooks. And, wouldn't it be cool if a future Apple TV display had a iPod dock so you can synch DVR files from one system to another using an iPod or play directly with an iPod? I think this is the real future for the iPod and growing disk sizes. With DVR capable Apple TV displays and synching with an iPod broadcast recordings, larger iPod disk sizes make sense.
An Apple TV display with DVR would be the best reply to Windows Media PCs. Especially if the Display is on the rendezvous network and you can share iTunes, iPhotos and iMovies with it and any other Mac or in the case of iTunes, PC on your network.
Sharp and Phillips have already announced Airport and Rendevous enabled televisions. I think the closest Apple will get to making such a display will be provding third-party companies with help developing and integrating Apple technologies.
