Any ideas anyone? I just went through one and I'm lookin for some tunes that would do me good. What are the best breakup songs in everyone's opinion? Thanks.
Cry Me a River - Julie London
"You can cry me a river, cry me a river, cause I cried a river over you"
Secondly, if you've suffered a breakup, don't wallow. Sad songs will only serve to prolong the pain.
Thirdly, you are of course going to wallow, so wallow in style. 'Miss Beverley' by the reggae singer Ijahman Levi makes grown men cry and might be the kind of thing you're after.
Altogether now: "It's not who you love but it's who loves you..."
Thanks for the sympathy. I'm not wallowing, thats the worst thing. I've learned from the past, and it's not happening this time. I just needed something for last night. A few sad songs were what I needed. I'm gonna go on living my life now. Thanks for all the suggestions ya'll.
Sure the Rush stuff was baiting . . . they're . . . . ehem . . . . ok . . . . I geuss . . . when the guys mouth is closed
but I love music, and all sorts
except the new kind of metal that is basically a bunch of muscle bound teen or near-teen men wailing in fake angst about how bad or schizo it all is . . . in that long moaning drawl . . . . it just gets tiresome
and its all trying and failing to mimic Nirvana
they take themselves soooo seriously it would be hilarious . . . . if it wasn't so loud and ubiquitous
. . . all that worked up anger, its so phony!!
and I had to listen to that crap everytime I went to work out in Pittsburgh . . . ugh
Whatever you feel, but it works for me. It gives me the feeling that I've just got to look forward to what's coming ahead, and not look back.
Depressing songs like "Babe I'm Gonna Leave You" (one of my favorites) or the Smiths' "Last night I dreamt (that Somebody Loved me)" are good when you want a downer, but for those tough breakups, you've got to look forward.
How about "Free" by the Soup Dragons?
Fair enough. As others have pointed out, a dumping required an entirely different kind of music. A long, drawn out, soul-destroying breakup requires much wallowing, and Peter Gabriel is best for that.
"Ramble On," for my money, is a road-trip, driving across the bridge over lake Ponchartrain into New Orleans, keep you awake while you drive all the damned way across Kansas, announce your arrival into New York City for the first time, steel yourself for battle, kind of song.
First off, good luck with the breakup man, we've all been there and it's one of those tough "learning experiences" that get easier (or crazier!) with age. It sounds like you've got it under control though, you've got an attitude that more people should have when something like this happens...give yourself a pat on the back for that. Keep your head up mate!
Here's my contribution for a non-wallowing breakup song. Click on the title and you'll get the MP3.
iPod hit me again with another jewel. "Ballad in Plain D" by Robert Zimmerman. It tells the story of dylan's love for an unnamed woman (supposedly Joan Baez) who eventually kicks him out.
"my friends from the prison, they ask unto me:
How good, how good, does it feel to be free?
and i answer them, most mysteriously:
Are birds free from the chains of the skyway?"
ok, the quote don't seem so relevant, but it rounds the song nicely.

I used to love her
But I had to kill her
I used to love her, Mm, yeah
But I had to kill her
I had to put her six feet under
And I can still hear her complain
I used to love her, Oo, yeah
But I had to kill her
I used to love her, Oo, yeah
But I had to kill her
I knew I'd miss her
So I had to keep her
She's buried right in my backyard
Oh yeah, Oo yeah, whoa, oh yeah
I used to love her
But I had to kill her
I used to love her, Mm, yeah
But I had to kill her
She bitched so much, She drove me nuts
And now I'm happier this way, yeah
Whoa, oh yeah
I used to love her
But I had to kill her
I used to love her, Mm, yeah
But I had to kill her
I had to put her, Oo, six feet under
And I can still hear her complain

Hey ooh.
Sheets of empty canvas.
Untouched sheets of clay were laid spread out before me as her body once did.
All five horizons revolved around her soul. As the earth to the sun.
Now the air I tasted and breathed has taken a turn.
Ooh, and all I taught her was everything.
Ooh, I know she gave me all that she wore.
And now my bitter hands shade beneath the clouds of what was everything.
All the pictures have all been washed in black. Tattooed every day.
I take a walk outside. I'm surrounded by some kids at play.
Oh, I can feel their laughter. Oh, so why do I sear?
Ooh, and twisted thoughts that spin around my head.
I'm spinning. Oh, I'm spinning.
How quick the sun can drop away.
And now my bitter hands cradle broken glass of what was everything.
All the pictures have all been washed in black. Tattooed everything.
All the love gone bad turned my world to black.
Tattooed all I see. All that I am. All I'll be. Yeah.
Uh huh... Uh huh... Ooh.
I know someday you'll have a beautiful life.
I know you'll be a star in somebody else's sky but why, why, why can't it be, oh, can't it be mine?
Oh... Ohh yeah oh.
Do do do do do do do (x20 total) Yeah... Yeah...
Hi. (x6)
Yeah. (x3)

Terrible Lie - NIN
Those should get you started.

Bad Religion - I Love My Computer
I love my computer
You make me feel alright
Every waking hour
And every lonely night
I love my computer
For all you give to me
Predictable errors and no identity
And it's never been quite so easy
I've never been quite so happy
All I need to do is click on you
And we'll be joined
In the most soul - less way
And we'll never
Ever ruin each other's day
Cuz when I'm through I just click
And you just go away
I love my computer
You're always in the mood
I get turned on
When I turn on you
I love my computer
You never ask for more
You can be a princess
Or you can be my whore
And it's never been quite so easy
I've never been quite so happy
The world outside is so big
But it's safe in my domain
Because to you
I'm just a number
And a clever screen name
All I need to do is click on you
And we'll be together for eternity
And no one is ever gonna take my love
From me because I've got security,
Her password and a key

I Hope, I Think, I Know
Oasis/Noel Gallagher
They're trying hard to put me in my place
And that is why I've gotta keep running
The future is mine and it's no disgrace
Cos in the end the past means nothing
You tell me I'm free then you tie me down
And from my chains I think it's a pity
What did it cost you to wear my crown
You dont like me why don't you admit it
D'you feel a little down today?
Bet you ain't got much to say?
But your gonna miss me when I'm not there
You know I dont care, You know I dont care
As we beg and steal and borrow
Life is hit and miss and this
I Hope, I Think, I Know
And if I hear the names you call
If I stumble catch me when I fall
Cos baby after all, You'll never forget my name
(A handy photo of what you can "say" to her if she manages to piss you off more).
"Salt in My Tears" - Martin Briley
I never did it, no, I won't admit it
Why should I lie for you anymore
You never loved me, you pushed and shoved me
I see the woman I never saw
I saw you laugh when the knife was twisted
It still hurts but the pain has shifted
I'm lookin' back at the time that drifted by
But I won't cry for the wasted years
'cause you ain't worth the salt in my tears
Feeling neglected, used and rejected
You need a shoulder to lean upon
Baby you picked him, found your next victim
Don't worry someone will come along
I broke the spell that you kept me under
I had enough of the rain and thunder
I lost track of the time and I wonder why
But I won't cry for the wasted years
'cause you ain't worth the salt in my tears
I'll sit around and drink a few more beers
Until the memory just disappears
'cause you ain't worth the salt in my tears
I saw you laugh when the knife was twisted
It still hurts but the pain has shifted
I'm lookin' back at the time that drifted by
But I won't cry for the wasted years
'cause you ain't worth the salt in my tears
'cause you ain't worth the salt in my tears
'cause you ain't worth the salt in my tears

"So you wanted
to take a break,
Slow it down some,
and have some space.
Well f
Give me my money back
Give me my money back,
You bitch!
I want my money back
And don't forget
And don't forget
To give me back my black t-shirt
..."
It's a somewhat angry song, but hey - some breakups are unfortunately angry.
Another suggestion: "The Last Polka", again by Ben Folds Five - a marvelous song.
