Well, the icon is changed, but unfortunately, Safari doesn't ever refresh the favicon. So, you will have to delete your ~/Library/Safari/Icons or reset safari to get any changes.
Brad - I reset Safari and it changed the favicon for the front page of AI, but not the forums. Do I actually need to shut the program down and then relaunch for the effect to take place?
(Don't want to Quit Safari - if i don't have to - just yet, as I have a few other things going on at the moment)

Yes, and delete your ~/Library/Safari/Icons folder. Resetting Safari doesn't touch the icons. Quitting, deleting this folder, and relaunching is the only way I know that will force it to refresh.
