Geez, you two! (Midwinter and Chu-bakka)

Both of you guys sure are worried that somebody is going to patronize you...in fact you seem ready to fight at the drop of a snarky comment...very entertaining!

For those who are currently patronizing the Dean camp (I'm using the "good" definition of patronizing this time, look it up)) they'd best be ready for the skeletons to emerge from the closet. Dean is no more a rebel or outside the system than most of his rivals in any party.

Eleven months is an eternity in politics.

But Dean's "rebel status", and being patronized, is a bit off-topic....

This was about Kerry's use of profanities in a magazine, purportedly aimed at kids who've never bought a car. Let's see him show up on Carson Daily with a Tyson-style tattoo over his left eye....that'd show he's a loose-enough cannon to run the country.

    <sigh>

unfortunately in this country profanity is frowned upon. televison bleeps just about everything as we all know (that's another threas though), therefore it is bad for a presidential contender to swear but the mainstream probably won't pick up on it because it's not a big enough story. so it probably won't hurt him

You contradict yourself. If it's only about Kerry's "use of profanities in a [youth-oriented] magazine," then you are being "a bit off-topic" by talking about anything else. My point is that this thread is a great opportunity to talk about how candidates in general effectively court younger voters. And a Tyson-style eye patch, as you facetiously note, is obviously not an effective way to do so. Kerry has done some rather outrageous things in the course of campaign, including riding a motorcycle onto the stage of the Tonight Show. That's certainly not effective, considering the whole event was staged rather than authentic.

Yet, Dean for some reason is doing all the right things to court younger voters. I agree with midwinter that Dean's appeal to younger voters is based in part on his "rebel status"- or how Dean capitalizes on "the desire of youths to rebel against the establishment." That's evident in a few areas including 1) that he's a vocal Democratic challenger running against the de facto conservative establishment: moderate judicial branch, center-right legislative branch, and conservative executive branch. Generally, that much can be said about any of the candidates, yet it seems to only stick with Dean.

I think the reason is that although he appears to be running only a little left of most of the other candidates, Dean doesn't have the stigma of participating in the establishment. He was Governor of a small state that legalized same-sex unions and didn't personally vote for the Iraq War resolution- nevermind not flip-flopping his position on it (although I maintain that Kerry's flip-flop was pretty well reasoned). 2) Having not participated in the establishment, he seems more principled and less political than the other candidates- despite boasting that he was a political triangulator before Clinton was... He also boasted that he's from the "Democratic wing of the Democratic Party" as if to say the other candidates have given in to conservatism too much. 3) Probably most important is his cutting-edge internet campaign discussed in The Dean Connection.

That's just a stab in the dark as to how younger people appeal to Dean and not the other candidates.

ahhh... as always atrios is on the ball.

    F'ed Up

So, Kerry said the F word in a Rolling Stone interview. Dubya flashback:

$$$$ Saddam. We're taking him out.

-George W. Bush, March 2002, as reported in Time.

You no-good $$$$ing son of a bitch, I will never $$$$ing forget what you wrote.

-George W. Bush, to journalist Al Hunt in front of his 4-year old daugher, 1987.

If the Bushies are making a stink about this, it's incumbent on any journalist who has heard, but not reported, our president saying a naughty word or two to report them for, as they say, "balance."

    Of course, let's not forget:

    "Pussy."

-George W. Bush, 1988, in response to a question about what he and his father are talking about when they're not talking politics.

    Yawn.

I remember there being a big deal about Bush leaning over to Cheney at a campaign rally and calling a reporter an "asshole" when the mic was open.

My only gripe with Kerry's so-called outburst was that Dean didn't do it first. 8)
