I really liked the Kings of Leon album. CCR fans should check it out, great southern rock.

Also, Ben Harper's album was excellent.

First of all, I've seen DMB 14 times, and loved the live show every time. I love the live stuff, but I do agree with you that sometimes a studio recording would be better. It's not that they do too much live stuff, but not enough studio stuff. I was at the show that is now Live In Chicago, 12.19.1998 I think. That was my first show :-)

You want to see the greatest live show you will ever see in your life though, go see Phish (If you can get tix, it's very hard) or the all time best, Belá Fleck and the Flecktones. Hands down the best live show in the world, it's amazing. If you've never heard of the Flecktones, check them out, they are unbelievable.

That was last year. Good nomination, though. (I would have picked this one, if only for posterity's sake)

my release date year goes from october to october.

for example, the new al green just came out and i like it a lot. but by january or february i might think it sucks. same with the new alicia keys.

so my cutoff date has always been the first tuesday in october.

i'm like the supreme court that way*.

seen both, and have been a flecktones fan for years now

Gov't Mule blows both of them away and makes them look like preschoolers.

I can't think of anything that's come out this year and I've bought a ton of stuff. Hmm...was dissapointed in the black rebel motorcycle club and I don't know what the rat's been smoking but that Dandy Warhols record sucked.

The Blur record is good, but what else. Oh, my cd of the moment is definitely The Little Killers self titled debut. Record of the year is definitely Gogol Bordello's Multi Kontra Culti Vs. Irony. It may have come out last year, but if that's the case then it just means it was the album of the last two years. If you go to this page http://www.gogolbordello.com/muzon/multi/ you can click on the first song, When The Trickster Startsa Poking and check it out. The only other things I can think of is that I like the Northern State cd and also the Fannypack disk and the Outkast song is definitely single of the year.

I don't disagree with a single selection. All solid stuff.

Not a huge AAS fan, but they are good.

I don't really see how producing a perfect copy of the Radiohead sound (including the tortured singing) would be considered innovation. Might be me though.

Whenever the new year starts coming to a close, I start to get excited about wxpn's (Public Radio from University of Pennsylvania) to 50 albums of the year. They are listener-selected, but from what I've found, they tend to be a good represtentation of what each year is like, with an astounding variety (well, it's almost precisely the variety of music that I like). You can look for their 2003 countdown here: http://www.xpn.org/top50_2003_calendar.php

I can't seem to find the previous years, but I know they are there somewhere...

    It's a great station!

I had no idea that Muse had a new album. How the hell did that get past me?

This year had a few things going for me in music appreciation; Broadband at work, P to P software and iTunes.

Finding and listening to music before purchase? Yes, though much of the new music out there really sucks. So, I stuck with finding and burning my favorite "oldies" and some new stuff.

I waited three years for Iggy Pop's new CD and was totally disapointed...

I'd have to give White Stripe a pat on the back for revitalizing the rock and roll scene. Mr. White will be a force himself with his own studio and label.

Heard he's producing Loretta Lynn's new album...yeah, "Coal Miner's Daughter" Loretta Lynn...that should be interesting.

Many deaths in the music/rock world...I'll miss:

Johnny & June Carter Cash...need I say more?

Mickie Most, MAJOR record producer...discovered The Animals

    Nina Simone, Jazz singer

    Earl King, Blues guitarist

Eva Boyd, who sang "The Loco-Motion" as Little Eva

Johnny Paycheck "Take This Job and Shove It!"

Edwin Starr "WAR, huh! What is it good for!"

Barry White "Can't Get Enough Of Your Love, Babe"

Sam Phillips, founder of Sun Records and arguably the founder of Rock & Roll

Warren Zevon "Lawyers, Guns and Money"

    Robert Palmer "Addicted to Love"

Paul Burlison, Rock and roll pioneer as a member of the Rock 'n' Roll Trio

And of course the losers of the year:

    Phil Spector

    Michael Jackson

    Courtney Love

Let's hope that 2004 will bring some new and vital music to the ears and not the endless succession of soon to be has-beens for VH1's "Where are They Now?".

Opening this thread up a month later:

    I Can't Stop - Al Green

Dear Catastrophe Waitress - Belle & Sebastian

Transatlanticism - Death Cab for Cutie

Boy In Da Corner - Dizzee Rascal

Earthquake Glue - Guided By Voices

Rainy Day Music - The Jayhawks

    Atlas - Kinky

    The Love Below - Outkast

    Hot Shit - Quasi

Chutes Too Narrow - The Shins

    Reconstruction Site - The Weakerthans

    Meadowlands - Wrens

Date With the Night Yeah Yeah Yeahs

    Elephant - White Stripes

    Lovers - The Sleepy Jackson

Give Up - The Postal Service

    In almost alphabetical order.

Notable mention: New Pornographers, The Strokes, British Sea Power, Enon

Best album: Chutes Too Narrow. I have grown to like the album even better than when I reviewed it for my school paper. Different, but better, than Oh Inverted World. (Also, why did the Shins get bumped from Letterman? That would have been an actual reason to watch his lame show)

2004 prediction: Dizzy Rascal crosses the pond and surpasses all the hype.
