Strange observation
Yesterday I went into my dad's work and downloaded some stuff on the beige G3 tower in there. Now we have the exact computer at home, 300 MHz with Zip and same amount of RAM. I looked in Apple System Profiler found it was a 266 MHz G3 with 2 MB L2 Cache ~! My beige has 1 MB L2 and I didn't think this could be possible. Weird!
Also the machine seemed twice as fast as mine, only adding to the evidence that we got a lemon.

<strong>you have the exact same computer yet yours is 300 not 266 <img src="graemlins/bugeye.gif" border="0" alt="[Skeptical]" /> </strong><hr></blockquote>
That's confusing me too. How is it exactly the same?
Different models.
<strong>He probably thinks they're the same because they look the same.

Could be, but I think he knows better.
Tiger, have you tried a completely clean install and reformatting of your hard drive? Some crappy extensions, bad blocks, or something might be holding it back. After time things may happen. Try swapping the HD with the work machine.
I was also pointing out that I saw 2 MB L2 Cache, but maybe my eyes were playing tricks on me during the time, because I know no machine has a 2 MB L2 Cache.
