The trade, if it happens, would be A-Rod for Manny. Then, the Sox would turn around and deal Nomar to either the Angels or the Dodgers. The point would be to get rid of Manny for someone who isn't a pain-in-the-a$$. Also, the Sox are concerned they won't be able to re-sign Nomar so they'd at least get something in return for him.

How "New York" was the Babe or Reggie Jackson before they went to the Yankees? A-Rod would be adopted by Boston in about a nanosecond. I like Nomar a LOT and would love to have BOTH players on our team but Nomar's not as good as A-Rod. Even if the deal was Nomar for A-Rod, that would definitely be an upgrade.

As for Andy, I wonder what income tax rate he was paying in New York? NYC also levies an income tax too, right? Texas doesn't. The Yankee offer was bigger but not as much as you'd think at first glance. The reason you're so bummed is because he was a good guy who did his job and gave the Yankees their money's worth. I feel for ya, applenut but I'm also glad he's gone the Houston.

Heh. We got Schilling. Almost forgot to mention that.

And the Mets lost how many games last year? I believe it was somewhere in the area of 100. It is never a great day to be a Mets fan.

Well, the Met's do suck, big time, but they are my team so I will support them to the grave or the end of the MLB whichever comes first (I'll get you Selig!!!) However it is the sworn duty of all true Mets fans to hate the Yankees, so I'm only doing my job.

On the the real topic, IMHO the A-Rod for Manny deal is a wash. If the Bo Sox do pull it off they are trading 2 big bats for 1 giant bat. The real test will be what they get in return for Nomar once they find a a place for him to go. However the Bo Soxs really do have the best pitching staff in baseball if their big three starters can stay healthy the entire season. I would trade a little offense for the best pitching staff in baseball any day.

The Yankees seem to be directionless right now. George has clearly taken over day to day operations of the GM and seems hell bent on breaking the $200 million mark for his team this year. Torre is pissed that Andy is gone and doesn't want Shefield. He'll be gone at the end of the season. In all honesty, I'm not sure that the Yankees make the playoffs this year, they have a lot of question marks at key positions.

On to my beloved Mets. Is anyone else concerned that this new Japanese player Kaz Matsui had 124 strikeouts last year? I'm not sure I want a leadoff guy that struck out 20% of time. But if his defense is as good as people are saying it is, I think that he and Reyes up the middle will make our pitchers better. With a quality defensive centerfielder I think it could add two or three wins to the starting pitchers lines next season.

Heh, it's amazing how much more I can write when I haven't had a ton to drink :-p

yes, this was a surprising deal. no one here in houston thought it would happen. i think even mcclane didnt have a clue...but pettitte himself made it happen. hats off to andy for actually being a decent human being and not following in other athletes' footsteps and being greedy money-following a**holes (arod). the astros will still not be good enough to win the central, but at least it seems like management is trying. and it resulted in the dodgers getting worse, which is always a good thing. only negative i see here is that the yankees are even stronger. oh well. cant win em all.

go stros. go giants. and f**k the yankees.

Hearing Yankee fans cry is great, but it's not a great day to be a Mets fan. If Fred Wilpon would stop being cheap and go after Vlad then MAYBE I'd be a happy Met fan. But until we get some players to help us compete again, I won't be happy. And yes, I'm excited about Matsui, but he won't make the Mets contenders.

I don't worry about Kaz striking out that much because his team in Japan wanted him to be a power hitter. before that, he struck out much less. Kaz and Reyes definitely will make us better in the field, but it looks like we won't be agetting Cameron. Who else is there good for centerfield? As long as Roger Cedeño isn't in the everyday lineup I'll feel a little better about our chances.

Blowing 12-15M a year on Vlad depending on the length of the contract is not going to help the Mets AT ALL. The Mets really have no chance considering the perennial nature of the Braves and the retention of most of the key players in Florida. I don't know how the Mets can spend so much every year.

EDIT: The Phillies are looking good too... The Expos may finally be done. Who knows though? They always surprise you in the end. The Mets were the only team in the NL East to finish under .500 last year...waaaaaay under .500.

I don't consider it blowing the money because it's a position that they need filled. Also, they want youth and speed at Vlad's still pretty young and he's fast. His arm is amazing, too. The only question mark is his back.

As of now, I think the Phillies are a lock to win the division. They've made great moves, and they'll be even better if they keep Millwood. I know I say this, along with a lot of Mets fans every year, but I think the Braves run is finally over. The Marlins should be good again. I doubt Montreal will contend because losing Vazquez and Vlad is horrible for them.

Hrm. I just heard a possible scenario where the Dodgers sign Vlad and trade for Nomar and Frank Thomas depleting some of our pitching. That wouldn't be bad at all.

hmm...i believe the results on the field speaks for itself. what was the payroll/win ratio for the dodgers? compare that to the Gs and stros, and it's embarassing how much money the dogs have wasted over the years to be a pitiful and pathetic franchise...
