Anyone who's ever read the original Bond novels (and *especially* the first one, Casino Royale) knows that Bond is supposed to be a complete bastard... and why. The first book sets up his psychological damages *beautifully*... and there's no way in hell you'll ever see a faithful adaptation of it.
Connery, Dalton, Brosnan, Lazenby, Nelson*, Niven, Allen, Moore, in that order.
* The FIRST James Bond. Bonus pts to anyone who can nail this one.

1954, Casino Royale. Produced by CBS. I hear it is terrible. Right now in the context of the James Bond mythos on film I'm personally not counting the renegade non-Eon flicks to be a part of the Bond cinema canon.
Actually, it's closer to the book than most of the films.
It was a 50 minute production by CBS for it's Climax Movie Theatre (wow, could never call it that these days ), indeed ran in 1954. Peter Lorre plays Chiffre, and is wonderful.
They made Bond (Jimmy Bond) an American agent, and FBI agent Felix Leiter was British agent Clarence Leiter, essentially just flipping them.
Other than that, it's quite possibly the most faithful Fleming adaptation, even if they only did the first half of the book. (The last half is where it gets a bit, er... dark. You *MIGHT* get away with actually showing it on post-9pm cable now. Maybe.)
Not a great flick, but watching it after almost 50 years of Bond films in between (!), you can see the seeds there already. Very fun for the Bond fan... even more fun for the Ian Fleming fan.
GoldnenEye..... the tina turner song written by bono and the edge. (okay maybe tied with live and let die too). song-wise, there are few other great ones.
I have all the theme songs....if anyone wants to *cough*preview*cough* them: AIM=SJPSU *cough*
Disagree, the best bond song, other than the theme, is "You only live twice" sung by Nancy Sinatra.
I too have all the Bond theme songs, at least through "License to Kill," for the simple reason that the CD I bought some time ago came out before goldeneye.

I think Bond should be a real dirty bastard - like Dirty Harry - and not some pretty boy.
That's what Vin Diesel is for. . . After all, he's A New Breed of Superhero (tm)
i voted moore. maybe it was that i grew up after the connery days, so my first exposure to the bond movies was with him at the helm. or maybe i just liked the over-the-top villains from that era (jaws, mayday, etc.)
is it just me, or does timothy dalton look like a young patrick stewart? (okay, you have to mentally paint in some hair, or erase it, depending on how you think of the comparison), but the facial structure, ESPECIALLY when they smile, is very similar. i wouldn't be surprised if there was a loose relation there.

That's it. We'll get Patrick Stewart to be the next Bond.
In all seriousness, if Stewart had a head of hair and were 20 - 30 years younger, he'd be a perfect Bond. Tough, cool, charismatic and popular with the ladies.
