Actually yeah, Eugene, I was thinking something like that would appear at some point: a "LoTR complete edition" might be worth a look.

For my part, I didn't see too much overlap in the first two extended cuts, but I haven't seen RoTK yet.

An interesting project would be a completely chronological re-edit of all three films into one. Show the forging of the rings, the last battle of the Second Age, Smeagol and Deagol finding the ring, the retaking of Osgiliath with Boromir, etc. as it would happen instead of in flashbacks

Ehgads!!! No!!! Do you have any respect for storytelling devices. Sometimes a story should not be told chronologically. That is part of the magic, you get them hooked, then you reveal to bring 'em in further. Please, please don't scare me with such ideas again.

so for everyone who has seen matrix trilogy and LOTR trilogy... which one did you like better? I haven't seen ROTK yet, but I thought the first two LOTR were really slow, especially the first one. All everyone did was run around from bad guys, not entertaining/no story. Granted I am a big Matrix fan, I do like Matrix better. To me, more interesting story, more themes to read into, + crazy insane special effects. (Weird coincidence, a revolutions song just started playing while typing this) Anyway, what trilogy is the winner?

Peter and Phillipa's idea, not mine. And I like it. It wouldn't be COMPLETELY chronological, but certain things would be better placed when they happened.

Considering the Matrix sequels were glorified action films with crappy scattered speeches by the Merovingian, Architect and Oracle, I'd have to say the LotR trilogy is a hojillion times better.

AS much as I hate agreeing with Eugene I don't assume that such a retelling would be completely chronological, but only restore chronology where previous devices were not so much story-telling devices as movie splitting comprimises.

I agree with most people here that the flashbacks took too long. And I always got bored when the focus moved to Frodo and Sam, because it was a lot of them just climbing, sleeping, climbing, fighting with Gollum, more climbing, etc. Boooo-ring. Bring on the battle scenes!

I liked the battle scenes but not quite as much as the ones in Two Towers. The Battle of Helm's Deep was sweet and it remains my favorite battle in the series. A small force slaughtering wave after wave of orcs is awesome... all the battles in this one were lopsided, one side kicked the other's ass or vice versa.

But that wasn't the really important bit. I do think a few things that were left out should have been put back in:

    - Denethor's Palantir. I'm glad they showed Pippin stealing a look at the one from Isengard, and that would have made a perfect setup for revealing that Denethor had gone mad because of the Palantir he had. In fact, Denethor threw himself onto the flames, but in the movie Gandalf pushed him (which he would have never done). Denethor was not well done.

    - Show what happens with Aragorn and Arwen. They already showed that they have a kid, why not at least do a short scene showing them with their kid, in real life instead of a dream/vision thing?

    - Show what happens with Legolas and Gimli. Gimli's character was very flat in these movies. In the books, he became the only dwarf to sail to the west, with Legolas.

    - Show what happens with Rohan and Gondor, maybe a quick thing about how it's the age of men and whatnot. I guess they already kinda did that.

    What I liked:

    - Leaving out the Scouring Of The Shire. I know a lot of people are mad that they didn't do this, but I for one am happy. I wasn't a big fan of that part of the book, although it does fit. For the movie though, it would have been dumb because once the ring was destroyed it was all downhill from there. Adding an extra half hour would have been senseless. So I'm glad they cut it out.

    - Showing how the hobbits ended up. Thank you! I was afraid it would show them getting back to the shire and then, oh boy, the end! Good thing they at least showed what happened to Frodo, Bilbo and Sam.

    - Barad-dur crumbling while the eye looked around was awesome.

    - So were the eagles. The eagles just kick nearly unlimited amounts of ass.

Overall I thought it was good - both a pretty good adaptation of the story, and a good movie in its own right. That's the real challenge - keeping it loyal to the books while still making them good movies. And I think Return Of The King did a great job of that, as did the other two movies.

I saw the movie yesterday and was kind of disappointed.

A major thing that annoyed me in the theatre we were in was that people wouldn't stop clapping at certain points in the movie, and as a result, you'd miss something that was said or going on. It got very old, very fast.

I thought the undead were kind of cheesy, but that's just me I guess. I had a lot of gripes with the movie after they first appeared. I thought the ending of the movie really dragged on too. I half expected after they closed the door to the shire house that we'd see an interior shout of Sam and his family eating dinner or something.

I also didn't like that Saruman was completely cut from the movie. Your main nemesis for the first two movies and he's completely absent from the third with the only mention coming from the treants? Didn't really work for me.

Oh please! Have you actually read the book? There's more crying and manly kissing than you can shake a stick at. Get over it. ;p

I finally got to actually see the movie and not just read other people's reviews.

    It's a darn good movie.

Now just 11 months until the REAL movie comes out (ie, the extended cut. )

Couldn't agree more. Why only show what happens to the Hobbits? I don't understand the logic behind it. Either include everything that happens after the War of the Ring or don't show it at all.

I only liked the final concussive blow when the eye finally zapped itself. The fall of the tower was just CG indulgence.

The last 30 minutes of the movie really 'ruined' it. I don't mean ruin, but it could have been so great if the post-war episode was done in a more complete fashion, and faster. What's the goddamned point of showing Gandalf LAUGHING in slow motion???

You can blame Tolkien for that one. They were pretty much Deus Ex Machina and in the book they moved like locusts.

Indeed. Another year... "Darn good" is what I'd call it, but have you seen some of the professional reviews out there? They have taglines like "Greatest movie of the modern age" and silly stuff like that.

Are you sure you didn't read the porno edition?

i don't mind the undead, there are compromises that had to be made, sure... but few scenes are totally crap namely:

Legolas fighting that elephant (mammoth, or oliphant or however hobbits used to call these things), and then sliding down it's trunk...

First he does something equally stupid during the battle in TT (sliding on a shield down the stairs....)

    Or that one:

Frodo wakes up... Gandalf, ha haha hahahah hahahahhahahah ha (or rather haaaaaaaaaa hhhaaaaaaaa hhhhaaahhhhhhaaaaaaa hhaaaaaaaa....), then hobbits show up, starting acting up like complete idiots, then Legolas and Gimli, then Aragorn, then SLOWLY Sam walks in, Frodo looks into Sam's eyes (you can see other hobbits jumping in the background, but in slow motion), then they stare at each-other for the loooooongest time, sorry but that's a bit too much for me.

Or Sam's idiotic dialogue about carrying Frodo .....

Overall not too bad of a movie, CG was really top notch, Orcs, weapons, costumes, SFX, that's great, but why that soap opera stuff?

By far the best scene in the movie is Theoden's poem/rally, even though its strays from the book.

    Arise, arise Riders of Theoden!

Fell deeds awake; fire and slaughter!

Spear shall be shaken, shield be splintered

A sword-day, a red day, ere the sun rises!

Ride now, ride now! Ride to Gondor!

I do like the change though. "Ride now, ride for ruin and the world's ending..." sounds better.

Clank clank clanking his sword against the spears, and the Ben del Maestro vocal melody from "Isengard Unleashed" in the Two Towers original score (more booming this time.)

God, it was so much better than Aragorn's. I don't know whether to blame the writing or the actor. Bernard Hill's recitation is so much better. Maybe it's his accent vs Viggo's fake accent. I don't know.

Sure, but that kind of stuff happened all over in real life. That's what the towers of the Great Wall of China are for. There are beacon towers. And before that, civilizations used networks of runners/riders.

Whether it happens in real life or not, it's still freakin' cool. Besides, how often do you see beacons being lit in a chain like that? How many of us here are guards at the Great Wall to keep out the Mongolians? Anyone? Didn't think so.

You know, rocket launches are so cheesy when they happen in movies because geez, they happen in real life too. That doesn't change the fact that they're still really cool!

The more beacons the cooler, yeah. That's why they lit more than seven in the movie I guess.
