[quote]Apollo, which is said to be the new code-name for the chip that was originally tagged 'Goldfish,' is what Apple sources say the company will attempt to base its first series of Quad-Processor Power Mac G4 on. "The goal is to debut a Power Mac Quad G4 running with four 1GHz -- for a total of 4000MHz -- by early 2002," sources said.<hr></blockquote>

It's on the homepage. The article is just old. You can find the article from December 27, 2000 <a href="http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/0012/vger.shtml"; target="_blank">here</a>.

I read the Dec 27, 2000 Appleinsider article on the quad g4's for this Jan '02. I don't think this will happen because it adds more cost and complexity.

The Dec 27, 2000 article also says that the G4 test units "have begun to pop up in recent weeks leading up to Macworld Expo." Were these test units the ones that were released at the following Macword expo? If the answer is yes, then I believe the G5 will be released this Jan '02 since it has been reported that G5 test boxes are currently being evaluated.

    Okay, how about both.

Well, OSX is only capable of running on 2 processors as of 10.1.2, so no quad just yet!

I was thinking that we maybe seeing both G4 and G5 PowerMacs

G4 will be offer in MP config while the G5 stays in single processor due to the cost and yield....

But if there's is enough G5 for DP config we don't need G4s

Why is OS X limited to 2 processors?

it's not really limited.. see the current version is compiled to undertand up to 2 processors, a new complile could fix it so a powermac could run more, prob a 10.1.X release -- if it were to happen, which i doubt but-- would love to see =)

How do you know this? Is there a way to check for myself?

    launch terminal and type hostinfo

it says "Kernel configured for up to 2 processors."

so what? change a flag when compiling and there you go...

Yeah, it shouldn't be hard at all to make a 4 proc. OS X. I don't know why it wouldn't recoginze them already, being fully multithreaded and all.

But would a quad G4 be a waste of time and money? Would the apps have to be re-coded to make use of 4 processors?

The apps rely on the OS for job management as relates to the hardware in OS X. (that's why X is more stable than 9.x - X does not allow apps to directly access hardware in virtually all cases).

So Carbon and Cocoa apps (as well as the Classic environment itself) would blindly use whatever processing power the OS assigned to them, 1, 2, 4, processors.

Ok, so a quad would run Photoshop and say Appleworks like it should x4. So as then a quad would really be fast system wide? mm, something to think about.

What about a quad 867 versus a dual 1.2ghz, which would be faster? So all apps in X will take advantage of every ounce of juice a quad could muster up? Wow.

A single app will only use more than one processor if it is multi-threaded. It will only use one processor per thread that it creates (maximum). Different apps running at the same time will be spread across the available processors. In general having fewer faster processors is better because there are times when you're going to be waiting on a single thread.
