THAT is the end-game folks. Apple has thought this through. They know MS. They know the game. That is how it will be played out.
Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes. To everything. I arrived at where you are about 2 weeks ago. What a revelation! Keep trying to join the dots long enough and eventually they form a picture. But it's a Big Picture. You need to stand back a bit to take it all in.
I think you're right - it is a format war (on top of everything else) but they're not at the point yet where they need to go head to head with MS on that front.
I don't think Apple or anyone necessarily knows exactly how the whole digital music thing is going to pan out. But they've placed themselves in a good position by hitching their wagon to a product that, no matter what happens, will always be in demand.
And I think all of this (iTunes, iPod, iTMS) continues to be as much a battle for hearts and minds as anything else.
Current problem, a VAST majority of computer users, mostly windows users, have NO CLUE what .aac is, they also believe that .wma is an open standard(because it's very prevalent)

I don't really see this changing anytime soon.

Chris, I was 100% with you until this little bit right at the end here...

Long experience tells me that Apple will find a way to mess this up.

I'm being optimistic that things have changed.
