Apple has been getting people used to associating those colors with the 'iPod' brand. Check out the colors used in the recent TV ads.
I think they had the iPodlets in mind when the colorful iPods ads were designed. It strengthens the brand. They wanted the new miniPods to be recognized and accepted immediately as 'iPods' with all the market-respect that goes with them.
Over the last few months people have gotten used to those (very visually distinct) colorful iPod ads. I know that they were a surprise to me at first. They took some getting used to until I went from thinking (wtf?) to think (iPod!).
Now people are used to associating certain shades of green, blue, pink and gold with the iPod - so the new colors fit right in.
The new iPod mini is a sheer marvel, I like it more than any design that has come out of Cupertino in a long time. It is so small, so light, so thin, and it still has a functional interface and purpose. I love the colors, having them as an option only makes me lust for it more. I think the blue, silver, and pink are the most attractive (haha yes pink). The price is not terrible to me, compared to other 200-250 stuff it's a good value still. I really cant believe how excited I am to be getting mine in less than a month now, I am so in love with this product.
Blue with custom engraving...this thing will just scream "I know a kickass product when I see one, and will pay any price to have it." haha.

I really feel these Ipod minis were designed specifically for the Asian market though. They scream that to me.
that is exactly what I thought !
they look asian indeed. i don't like the colours at all.
I'd go for the silver one w/o a doubt.
I know a company like apple is supposed to move forward and all, but I can't help repeating that the old key lime/tangerine etc colours were a lot cooler period.
also the way apple pictures the new products on the site is IMHO not very flattering at all to the products. The G5 for example striked e as butt ugly at first. after seeing real life pictures I liked them a lot more.
same thing with the iPods mini.... the pictures just look like renderings and are pictured to sterile that it kills all reference with the real world.

But those colors aren't really in any more. The muted look is. And trust me the minis look great...they will be pretty hot sellers. Even with the guys.
