When you said your car was making funny noises, he replied that maybe Seinfeld was in the trunk, doing stand-up comedy. It was a joke.
I think 'boot' means trunk, and that 'bonnet' means hood, in British/Australian English.
(Pardon me for intruding.)
Oh ok, thanks for clearing it up. I thought he meant that either I was ripping off a Seinfeld skit, or that I had Jerry Seinfeld I my shoe... I guess I'm not down with the lingo.
There's a beautiful part in Annie Dillard's "An American Childhood" that describes one of her neighbors skating down a frozen street through the lighted circles of the streetlights. That's exactly what popped into my head when Chinney wrote that.
Cheers

Hi Scott - How did your steaks turn out last night?
All that shoveling is good for your cardiovascular system.
How much snow do you have on the ground?
Btw, did you get to any of the Salt Lake City Olympics?
Just wondering.
The most beautiful winter scene I ever experienced was at a Sigma Chi fraternity party that was held up at a ski lodge one night. I went outside for awhile to look around. The snow reflected the moonlight, and the sky was intensely dark in comparison with the white mountain; the stars were in their millions, with no big city lights to mute their brilliance. There was not even a whisper of a breeze, and all was in silence in the crisp, clear air. It was somehow a very private, intimate experience with nature, for me. I'll never forget that scene - it's etched in my mind forever.

Nope. I've only lived here since August. But they held some of the events here where I live.

You really should get yourself a blog and write stuff like that down.
One of my fondest winter memories is from a few years ago when a massive ice storm left my home town out of power for a week over Xmas. After cooking Xmas breakfast on a propane fish fryer, playing board games all day, reading, talking, and generally living by the light of the day, I stood outside in the cold air and listened to the tops of the 100-foot pine trees snap off.

It sounds like small-caliber gunfire.

Well, I enjoyed looking at your pictures! What kind of camera do you have? I loved the fire shots - they are really artistic. The "pen" thing was funny. hehe. Why such a large and demolished box for a pen??? And now I am craving a steak, darn you! You made it sound so good. I haven't seen snow for such a long time. It looks so clean and lovely. Sigh.
The hike shots are magnificent; you could put out your own calendar.
Our power goes out here from monsoon rains. The power went out once during parent conference night. We were holding our conferences by candlelight; the streets were flooded with rain; and finally they cancelled the conferences. hehe Broke my heart.
A monsoon storm two years ago ripped my neighbors air conditioner off his roof, and it landed in the middle of the street, where it sat for a few days.
The thought of Seinfeld as a footwarmer brought a laugh as much as the image of him wearing a bonnet..
Does anyone remember the frilly shirt episode ?
No, but I remember the 'sponge' episode, and the medicine cabinet episode, and the episode about the chef who didn't wash his hands....some of those would fit right in with a few of these threads at AO. hehe.
Btw, I replied to your Chinese astrology question yesterday - can't even remember which thread it was in now.
I think Chinese astrology sounds terrifically interesting! I'm glad you mentioned it to me. But the site I went to didn't get into wooden horses, or fire horses; so I'll have to buy a book to get more details.
Bah! In North Bay we had temperatures well below ?30°C for a good portion of the past week. Thankfully, things warmed up to the region of ?12°C last night and a heap of snow was dumped on us.
The forecast for Monday gives a high of ?4°C! Sounds nice. Too bad the low is ?17°C.
Real cold. The other day It was like -10 or something in that region. Then the day after there was sunshine. Now there is an additional 3 inches of snow on the roads alone.. Lovely NY weather we are having.
In Minnesota on the 5th it got REALLY cold - the high was 6 Fahrenheit officially, but that was in the early hours of the morning. Then instead of warming up it just got colder and it didn't get above zero until the afternoon.
It's been fairly warm since then, though - it's been above freezing most of the day today and I didn't have to wear thick gloves or a face mask, just a headband and little thin gloves.
Dang it's cold tonight in Ottawa -40C with the wind chill right now and getting colder. I am too tired and cold to convert that to Farenheit, but anyway you measure it, it's cold. We've been setting records here the last couple of days.
Sigh... I really miss the snow! Thirteen years of living in New York, and now I'm stuck out here in sunny California. To tell you the truth I'd rather be shoveling my long NY driveway than sitting out in the sun. Looking at those pictures of Scott's grill was refreshing. Ahh the good ol' days.
OK, this is just getting stupid. The temperature here in North Bay has barely risen above ?25°C in the past week, and most days it's been a LOT colder.
