As far as slapstick goes, Jim Carrey was phenomenal during his prime. I wouldn't say he burned out. He just pushed slapstick so far to the limit that we got used to it, and it wasn't humanly possible to go any further. Some of those SNL episodes he's in. . . I blew out a kidney watching them.
there's too many greats, and i'm probably forgetting a few (no order): jerry seinfeld, jon stewart, steve martin, chevy chase, john belushi (a lot of the not ready for prime time players were very funny), bri regan, andy kaufman, rich pryor, rob williams, bill hicks... oo, that dood who would yell ferociously, died like a decade ago, tended to wear a long coat and scarf, and that cap... lewis black, chris farley, and lot's more. i rarely dislike a comedian. among them all, i think my current fav is belushi. for evidence of his greatness, find the "Luck of the Irish" skit, wherein he was a correspondent on Weekend Update.
Never thought much of him before, but was surprised when I heard on a radio program, a very funny and crude stage bit of Milton Berle's (yes, Milton Berle).
The same can be said of Buddy Hackett.
Many of these old timers were really quite foul and graphic in various lounge acts and roasts.

You obviously never saw him when he was touring! He is amazingly funny.
Bill Cosby.
"Dad is great!.....Gives us the chocolate cake!"
And "Ace Ventura Pet Detective" is pure genius.
