Where the heck are the new displays?

I'm about ready to buy a new Apple display; either 20" or 23". I can't see getting one with a three-year-old design that I never really liked because it's not adjustable. Any ideas what the holdup is? Surely Apple has been working on a redesign.

I gave in a couple months ago and bought a Samsung 19" display. I love it.

    Sorry Apple....you waited too long.

Yea... they are coming, as soon as the new RevBs arrive. I want a couple myself... to match the new dual 2.6 G5.

Who knows how long they have been sitting in a warehouse, waiting for their G5 companions to be released...

I have been thinking about the 20" and have been holding out until they arrive to make a decision as to which one to buy (Apple or another). That 20" Dell 2001FP is a really tempting offer - based on a new panel from Philips with 16ms response time, good specs overall. It was just on sale for $750 (ended the 28th of Jan) but I decided to hold out to see what Apple has to offer. I used to have a 23" ACD and it was the love of my life. Come on Apple \

I know matching the Mac aesthetic to a monitor is important. But imagine the deal one might get on a EOL 23" once the new displays are released. The current crop still ain't too shabby.

I can see myself, perhaps next fall, getting a new 20". If freelance work keeps steady (so far, so good!) I'll easily justify it.

Mail, Safari, iChat, etc. on the PowerBook screen, Adobe CS crap on the 20".

Then again, maybe I'll just take a vacation somewhere cool and far away too...15" at 1280x854 is actually pretty nice, considering I've never had anything beyond 1024x768!

i think the current cinema displays look acceptable next to the g5, but 3rd party monitors make the system look like all those crappy PC mods that crazy, messed up people do. anyways.... i think the new displays are ready to be released, and i cant wait to get mine...

    What?

What's more "mish-mashed" looking that a straight-edged, matte-metallic tower with a curvy, shiny and plastic-based display (with clear acrylic pieces, no less) sitting beside it.

IMO, Apple's current set-up looks a bit "messed up" and off-kilter.

No offense meant to anyone with a G5 and Apple display. But they DON'T go together all that well. The current Apple displays PERFECTLY match the G4, of course (plastic, silver, glossy, clear acrylic, curves/swoops, etc.). But the G5?

    Not hardly.

Am I the only one left who cares more about specs and prices than looks?

I mean, it sure is nice to have good-looking equipment, but first and foremost the stuff has to work. Looking at the way current Apple displays are constructed, I doubt they are half as adjustable to different viewing angles as any cheap Dell panel. I sure hope they find a decent way to mount them on an arm.

Othello, what prices do you think that the EOL'd displays will drop to in the UK? And will Apple still sell them through the Apple store, or will only resellers stock them (ie can I still get a HE discount?)?

I still think the best design would be an iMac like base with an arm. Make the base smaller of course, b/c the iMac base is a little bigger in person than you would think. They have already designed a fully adjustable display, just don't attach the computer!

I'm personally waiting for new 20"s (with a price point down to $999 due to the new 30"s) or waiting for the new displays and buying an "old" 20 for even less than $999.

Oh, and hopefully an 17" widescreen on the lower end. They could even use the same panel in the iMac and the Powerbook if they want to save on manufacturing costs.

I find it interesting that on Apple's G5 pages, they only have two pictures of a G5 sitting next to an Apple display. All the others are just the G5, no display. One is on the graphics page, and looks a little odd. The other is on the Solutions page and it's at an angle where the monitor is in the background.

There are probably 50 shots of just the G5 though. I think there is a reason.

Saw some nice LCD monitors at Best Buy today. Raise, lower and tilt. Very flexible and user-friendly. Brand? HP.

I suspect Apple has a whole new line of displays almost ready to go and is waiting for a particular size TFT to become available in quantity before releasing them. It seems these are more overdue than was the 15" aluminum PowerBook.

I can't wait to see what kind of adjustable thing they come up with. And, it better be at least somewhat adjustable compared to the current line. In other words, a little up and down and a little tilt and swivel.

I just went to CompUSA today and played with the 20" and 23" displays. I want a 23" one now! I could open a webpage AND have xCode/Porject Builder open AND have enough room to put something else! It was really cool Now if I could afford the $2000 price tag!!!

With hopefully a new Dual coming my way soon, what kind of compromises would I face getting a Samsung/Bateseis/etc display? Do you need an adapter, what?

Sorry, I'm coming from a B&W desktop and Albook with an adapter, and an old studio display, so I don't know what the current technology is.
