sinus remedy
i have been ill the last few days with sinus problems, not being able to work. i have had a hard time with my sinuses for as long as i can remember. i remember in my youth , i would hang upside down and blow my nose in hopes of clearing my congestion - it would drive me crazy.
with this latest episode i got the idea of blowing my nose into a shop vac. it worked nice at clearing my nasal passage, but it didn't clear my head conjestion. so i went to the doctor and i got some antiboitics and pain killers and a nasal spray. its working but it's going so slowly, and the pain killers keep me in bed.
i remember in my teens i had a similar sinus attack. it was very bad like now. well, i was a partyer in those days and i took a hit of lsd. well the symtoms went away as soon as the drug took affect and was i happy! i figured when i came back down i would be back to my miserable self but to my suprise, my problems were all gone! i never had a chance to try this remedy again but it was most remarkable and almost instant. if i had a hit right now, i'd take it.
i think it would have less negative affect than these hydrocodone pills. they just plaster me to the bed.

If your doctor didn't suggest it, call his office back and inquire about the usefulness of the following treatment....
One of the best things you can do for yourself is to go to the pharmacy and purchase a bulb syringe, which is a rubber bulb with a soft rounded tip. Put some warm (not too hot now) water in a cup, add a sprinkle of salt (a pinch might be too much) and maybe a drop of hydrogen peroxide (just a drop). Swirl it together, suck it into the bulb syringe, stand in front of your bathroom sink, tip your head back and squirt some (not all) of the water down one of your nostrils. Spit the water into the sink and have a tissue with you to help blow your nose (no shop vac needed). Do this several times for both nostrils.
Do this for several days. This is a direct topical treatment of the maxillary sinuses, which are most probably the ones that may be infected....but, I'm not a doctor and am not telling you to do this...just suggesting you check with YOUR doc to see if this would help!

that, and drink ALOT ALOT ALOT of water
My wife, though, gets it bad all the time . . . she ends up taking anti-biotics (something I think is just plain bad mkay?!) . . .
make sure your house is humidified: boil water, humidifier etc

Even better, tilt your head to the side and squirt the water into one nostril and let it go through and drain out your other one. I love it so much I started a thread about it!

Hi Glyph -
Sorry to hear about your problems. I wonder what particular property of LSD helped your sinuses? That's really very interesting. Honestly, you should google to see where there's sinus research going on, and then contact someone there with your experience. You never know but that some property of acid might be a watershed chemical in the sinus-infection arsenal.
I've pretty much always had mild congestion in the nasal passages. But I've always lived in the West, where dust is ever-present, and I figured that was the cause. But maybe not entirely:
After a car accident, I had six chiropractic sessions, which mainly involved traction (stretching the spine and possibly releasing pressure on impinged nerves).
As I was walking through the parking lot to my car after one session, suddenly all my sinus/nasal passage congestion completely cleared, and I could breathe freely for the first time in years (or maybe EVER!).
So who knows? Maybe traction could help free up nerves that affect your sinuses. My congestion-free time lasted only briefly; but then, I quit getting traction, too.
Anyway, just a thought. Good luck.
BTW, PLEASE PLEASE post a picture of you using the shop-vac!
Carol
looks roughly like that.
you put comfortable temperature water in it, and table salt to body saltness .. and let it run thru your head. it may sound and look gross, but it helps. whenever i cant breath for allergies, cold etc etc etc, i try that as first remedy. it helps.

Also, Glyph, re-do your house. Get rid of cloth-upholstered furniture, and get leather instead (sorry, poor cows
It's not the dust so much that bothers people, but the excretions from the dust MITES. Use white sheets/pillowcases, and bleach them when laundering. Launder frequently to get rid of dust mites and their excreta!
There was a documentary on TV once that showed the creatures that live on our bodies - even the cleanest of us. (BTW, I would love to get this video so I could gross out my students. They are SO fun to gross out. hehehehe!!!) Anyway, our skin sloughs off as we sleep - microscopic amounts. There are creatures waiting in the sheets, the documentary said, to consume this sloughed-off skin. So that's why I say, wash sheets (and ESPECIALLY pillowcases) OFTEN - with bleach.
Also, probably best not to use down pillows/comforters. Those feathers have stuff on them that causes respiratorily-sensitive people to react negatively. Be sure to launder not just sheets, but also blankets and mattress covers frequently. If we took a microscope to these things, we would probably faint dead away. Maybe best NOT to know!
Get brand new pillows, and before using, cover them with zipped pillow covers. Then, wash the pillow covers as often as the sheets. (The pillow COVERS save you from washing the PILLOWS!).
For someone who suffers chronically from congestion, these measures would seem to be a MUST. Did you ever see the Northern Exposure episodes that dealt with that guy in the glass house, or whatever it was? I can't remember what his problem was, but I bet getting rid of dust was one of his solutions. heh.
Carol
PS I have never had a sinus infection, but I DO have leather furniture; and 95% of my windows have wooden shutters. So that cuts a fair percentage of the dust mite problem. My house IS fully-carpeted, though. And the carpet is beautiful - palest powder-blue - that I paid a fortune for; so I won't be getting rid of it anytime soon, congestion or not!!!
"Sudafed" is an excellent decongestant. It will clear out your head. That's all it does. Buy the cheapest one you can find they all work the same.
Longer term you need to go to a doctor that does allergies. IME less it more. I use a nasal steroid spray seasonally. I take an antihistamine pill as needed. Mostly you need to stay away from things that get you started. I'm not too allergic to smoke but smoke + cats is horrible. Try to find out what your triggers are and stay away from them.

If you have a real acute sinus disease, the best treatment is corticoids, antibiotics and acetylcystein.
. My treatment is only for acute maxillary sinusis, that is diagnostiqued with the help of an X ray of the maxillary sinus (the sinus is white on the X ray).
Chronic sinusis is a different issue and has several origins :
- allergia
- septal deviation of the nose
- polyps (often related to allergia indeed)
- chronic inflammation (breaked by a nasal spray corticoids therapy)
- many others disaeases
- Aspergillus

Somehow I think this falls into the realm of the subjective . . . .

Antibiotics wont do a thing for you. The doctor shouldn't have even given them to you.

Fellows
Hey Fellows, thanks for that link. I printed it out and I'm putting it in the teachers' lounge at school.
A student recommended echinacea to me a few years ago. He said his mom gave it to him for sore throats. Well, eventually I tried it. I try many things for colds, etc. However, they never really seem to work.
BUT... "echinacea + Vit. C" REALLY, REALLY do work for me. Kids cough in my face all day long during cold and flu season. I would get horrendous colds that lasted two weeks, always started by a throat so sore that it was like swallowing razor blades every time I swallowed. It was sheer, unadulterated agony - teaching/talking all day with a sore throat.
But, if at the FIRST inkling of a cold, I immediately take two echinacea tablets with a chewable 500mg Vit. C - once in the AM and once in the PM, for TWO days, all symptoms vanish and I'm as good as new. No two weeks of misery and suffering. (Thank you, God. Thank you, Ricky and Ricky's mom!!!!)
I haven't been able to convince anyone of this at school. People are very stubborn...ya ever notice that? So, I'm taking the print-out and I'm going to wave it in their faces.

I used to take the four-hour Sudafed. It worked well as a decongestant, but it kept me awake if I took it near bed-time. However, if I took it at eight pm, I could sleep at midnight, because it lasted exactly four hours. So, good stuff...with a little advance-planning.

Ah, Ppflam, but some of the best things in life are subjective, wouldn't you say?
I live in a WARM climate, so I wanted my house to be done in light, COOL, refreshing tones. Sort of a Casablanca look.
White walls, white leather furniture, the palest POWDER-blue carpet (i.e. so pale it's closer to white), white ceiling fans with yellow-brass trim, white plantation shutters everywhere, leafy green potted palms and ficus, brass accents, some wicker, strong accent colors in forest green, black, jade, teal blue, with watercolor paintings picking up the accent colors and adding a few warm tones like yellow and rose.
When I finish decorating, sometime in the current millennium, my house will be a vision of loveliness - subjectively-speaking, of course.
PS A "medium-blue" carpet would make me feel physically ill. Yuck!
i'll finish reading these posts and the links y'all provided.
it is an infection, that's the reason for the antibiotics. i have another symptom that i have because of my sinuses - toothaches. i've been to the dentist twice this year and they find its my sinuses causing the pain. isn't that weird?
