Scattergories. Hands Down. Must be played with a dictionary or all hell breaks loose. Last week the family and I almost had shots fired over if "niggardly" was a word or not.

Is it? If yes, please use in a sentence so we can get the context!

Played a game of Triv. Pursuits recently, and discovered how quickly the questions get 'dated'.

Risk is also a favourite. Anybody got the LotR version?

I hope everyone realises that board games are most likely going to die. Xbox and PS2 seems to be more poopular these days!

    Monopoly

    Scrabble

    Stratgio

    Clue

    Risk

    Tabbo

    Poker

So what if the last two don't really count? They are still fun, esp. with the ladies

btw: Yea, Trivial Pursuit does age quickly. I lost an important game once because of a question involving Germany and the "Iron Curtain" silly me I lost that one b/c my lovely friends failed to inform me that the game was 15 years old.

    A typo.

It's "Settlers of Catan" and it was described above by Esper_Wizard and job. And yes, it rocks.

We have a set that was handmade by an ex-coworker of my wife's. He got hooked on the game in Germany, and lovingly recreated it using different images, but with wood pieces. He translated the instructions too. Essentially, we have Settlers plus a couple of the expansion packs, and got it as a Xmas gift. He's stopped making them now that you can buy it in the US for fear of copyright problems. At the time, you simply could not buy it here, so he figured he was just spreading the good word. Beautiful set.

    In no particular order:

    Backgammon

    Risk

    Monopoly

    Settlers of Catan

    Scrabble

any trivial pursuit like game - *evil grin*

If so, I may have played it once, and beat the pants off the smug architect friend who invited me to play. OH, how I loved that. hahahaha (He was my best friend's husband.)

I had a full-bore frontal attack going to distract him, but also had a sneak attack coming up on his left flank. I kept making apparently-stupid moves here and there to obscure the flank movement.

I sat there, calmly dead-pan, as I surrounded him without his noticing. It was all I could do to keep from jumping up and down and shrieking in excitement, as I continued to make the occasional stupid, throw-away move, to exploit his complacency, and his assumption that I was a dumb female.

Oh, the look on his face when his eyes widened and his mouth fell open as he realized the first horror of his defeat. It was a moment to be savored; mainly because, as I said, he was normally a rather smug and self-congratulatory kind of person.

I didn't laugh and dance around the room, shouting in joy at my victory (which is what I 'felt' like doing!!!!!). But I did have to avert my eyes to conceal the mischievous amusement that I'm sure was shining in them. hahahahahahehehehehe

Moral of the tale: never underestimate your opponent (even when they are small, feminine and completely inexperienced in the art of war). heh

I have no idea if this was the game called 'GO'. The name 'GO' didn't become familiar to me until I read about it in a Trevanian spy novel a few years later.

Back in the day I loved scrabble, Yahtzee, Life, and chess. Try the Spanish version of scrabble for kicks8).

Nowadays, Upwords (great for road trips), backgammon, and Rummikub (a Rummy-based tile game. ever play it?) are the best. Also, nothing beats Taboo when spending time with a group of friends.

Pick an ultimate favorite? no can do - each has its place, but I can say scrabble will always have a special place in my heart.

If Cribbage counts, then Cribbage. I am the unholy ruler of the cribbage world. Monopoly is good - but I get pretty nasty playing that game.

I'm going to have to differ with you on that. Our kids have both PS2 and GB Advance LP. [EDIT: My wife hates having both of these in the house] On their own they will play those, but will jump at the chance to play ANY board game with my wife or I. We try to have "Game Night at least once a week if not more often. Also They prefer when we have family reading time. My kids are 9 and 10 years old. Some times we will go weeks without the P2 or GB's coming out. And I know after talking with other families of their friends it is the same way. Of course there are those kids I know that PS2 is all they do but they are in the minority.

    Games we play most often:

    Quartto

    Monopoly

    Chess

    Checkers

    Backgammon

    Cards (Uno, Canasta)

    Sorry

We have two Cupboards full of games in the Garage from which to choose.

Settlers of Catan - outstanding. about an hour a game, easy to pick up, lots of different ways to win.

Tigris and Euphrates - a bit abstract and hardcore, but so very elegant

Battle Cry - fast and furious American Civil War. Gettysburg in an hour. true wargamers would hate it, as luck and strategy are about equal. I think its lots of fun; cool pieces too. Review

Ursuppe - amoebae in the primordial soup, running around eating (often each other) and gaining genetic mutations. class. Review

loads of reviews of loads of games on the Funagain site

    also like...

    Cosmic Encounter, Carcassone, Stratego.

should add a separate criterion we often use - whether games are 'girl-freindly'

[I suppose in a more pc sense..'suitable for partners whose interest/tolerance for such games is low']

Settlers and Ursuppe are provenly GF

    Battle Cry - debatable

    Tigris+Euphrates - no chance

recommendations of new games gratefully received. [will check out Rummikub - sounds interesting, as we play a lot of rummy anyway]

    hang loose

    Now playing- Art Pepper/Duo blues

I am guessing because most would not define it as a "board" game - though if you want to talk about "role playing" games I am sure you will get a few replies.

If you include card games, I would also say:

    Euchre

    Spades

    Hearts

    ... and my favorite ...
