    some more 2 cents

See this is what I was thinking, like, regardless of what is hidden in the image, my brain is going to start wandering off in all directions anyway, could it be that the so called subliminal messages just guide your brain down one train of thought or something?

I really don't know how they work that well, except that people are always going off about them.

any reading material on the matter would be appreciated.

I'm a cognitive psychologist and I'm familiar with some of the research on this. First, all that stuff about SEX in vodka pictures is crap. 99% of it just isn't even there, and what is there doesn't have any effect on people. The supraliminal stuff is pretty blatant - that's what really effects people, not the subliminal.

Having said that, subliminal effects can happen under very controlled circumstances. Usually you have people do some task on a computer screen, like press a key on the right or left side depending on where a flash occurs. In reality, the flashes are words presented for a fraction of a second and then masked to wipe out any aftereffects. You can then ask people if they saw any words, and they'll say no.

But if you use what are called implicit memory tests, you can show that at some level people did see them. For example, you might flash some words subliminally and then asked them to spell the word "sight." If they saw the words "eye" "vision" and "see" then they may be more likely to spell "sight." But if they saw "book" "reference" and "quote" they may be more likely to spell "cite." And if they saw "web" "computer" and "internet" they may be more likely to spell "site." Maybe a bad example, but you get the idea.

There's another study by Neuberg where people saw flashed words like above and then had two people play a simple game. When the words were ones like "fight" and "kill" people played more aggressively than the control words. I don't know if that effect has been replicated, but it's probably the closest to getting a real behavioral effect out of subliminal stimuli.

Another effect that's been studied is called the "mere exposure" effect, where people like things more when they've been exposed to them repeatedly. There are some studies where people flashed pictures of people subliminally and then asked them to rate how likeable the pictures were, and they like the pictures more if they've seen them more, even though they're not aware they've seen them at all. There are similar studies with little melodies - you're paying attention to someone talking in headphones, and you don't notice that little melodies are being played at the same time. Then you rate how much you like some melodies, and you give higher ratings to the ones you've heard before, even if you don't remember hearing them. That doesn't really count as subliminal, but it's the same idea.

Anthony Greenwald has done a lot of research on this stuff, if you're interested. Sorry for the teachy tone.

No, that was a great read thanks a bunch!

I really liked the 2nd example with sight, site and cite, but what do you do with people who ask "which sight(cite, site)?"

I definitely agree that people generally like what they have more exposure too, which largely explains why some brand names rule their respective markets(steve, you reading?!? )

Thanks for the suggestion(s), I'll look into 'em.

I could swer that I saw a subliminal the other day . . . I think it was during the Surebowl . . . in a beer commercial or something . . . there was general golden hue throughout the commersial and fast cuts and all that but there seemed to be a very very fast cut during some water splashing that was a red liquid splashing . . . but there was no reason to have red liquid (lookin like blood) when everything else was water or beer . . .

    hhhmmm?!?!\

anybody know what Im talking about? maybe it was somewhere else . . . all I remember is thinking breifly . . "was that supposed to be there . . or was that bad editing?"
